NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – In the first of two matches this week against a pair of Big West leaders, the CSUN women's volleyball team stretched UC Santa Barbara to four sets before falling to the Gauchos in a Big West match Tuesday night at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
Sophomore Carisa Barron continued her stellar play of late with a double-double of 15 assists and a team-high 14 kills to lead the Matadors. Barron, who hit .407 on 27 swings, also added five digs and one block. The Matadors (7-14, 2-7 Big West) also got 10 kills on 17 errorless attacks from Lauryn Anderson but could not overcome a two-set deficit in falling by set scores of 25-23, 25-15, 20-25, 25-18.
KEY STATISTICS
• Barron and Anderson combined for 24 of CSUN's 44 kills in the match as the duo hit .477 on 44 swings. Anderson also had a team-high four blocks (one solo) in the loss.
• Taylor Hunter and Taylor Orshoff each added seven kills and two blocks but no other Matador hitter had more than three kills. Senior Nicole Nevarez had three kills and 12 digs and is now within 12 kills of becoming the 14th player in program history with 1,000 career kills.

COACH JOHN PRICE SAID
"Our effort has been good all year and that's kept in virtually every match we've played. We've clearly gotten better as the year's progressed. Santa Barbara is a really good team and we played with them in three out of the four sets tonight. For us to play even with a team like Santa Barbara says a lot but it's still a little frustrating because I think we could have played better. We just have to keep working and try to get over the hump."
SET 1
The Matadors went toe-to-toe with the co-league leaders in the opening set as neither team led by more than three points throughout. After trailing 10-7, CSUN went on a 5-0 run to take a 12-10 lead following a UCSB attack error. An Anderson kill gave the Matadors their largest lead at 15-12 before UCSB answered with a 4-1 run to tie the score at 16-16. The set would remain tied at 17-17 and 21-21 before a kill and an ace by the Gauchos opened up a 23-21 lead. Kills by Barron and Magdalena Juric kept CSUN within one before Ohwobete connected for a kill on set point giving the visitors a 25-23 win.
SET 2
After both teams hit at a high percentage in set one, UCSB upped their percentage in set two while the Matadors slipped to .167. After Hunter's kill pulled CSUN within 8-7, the Gauchos claimed five of the next six points to open up a 13-9 cushion. Trailing by five at 13-8, CSUN scored twice to get within three before UCSB pushed its lead to seven at 20-13 following a Matador hitting error. Three more Gaucho points extended the lead to double figures which was also the final margin, 25-15.
SET 3
A kill by Orshoff capped an 8-3 to open set three as the Matadors would out-hit the Gauchos .324 to .132 in the frame. An Anderson kill pushed the CSUN lead to five (11-6) and the Matadors would maintain the margin when Barron's kill kept CSUN in front 14-9. UCSB would counter with a 5-2 run to close to within 16-14 before kills from Hunter and Juric pushed the lead back to four at 20-16. The Gauchos would score three straight out of a timeout to get within one at 20-19 before the Matadors claimed five of the final six points to close out a 25-20 win.
SET 4
The Matadors would force an early UCSB timeout when Layla Cederlind's ace gave CSUN a 10-6 lead. The Matadors still led by four (11-7) when the visitors answered with a 4-0 run to knot the score. Another Anderson kill kept CSUN in front 12-11 when the Gauchos engineered an 8-2 run to open up an insurmountable 19-14 advantage. The Matadors would only get within four the rest of the was as the Gauchos won the set going away 25-18.
The Matadors head to conference co-leader Hawai'i this Friday at 10 p.m. PDT.
