NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer suffered a 1-0 defeat to UC San Diego on Senior Day Sunday at Matador Soccer Field. The Tritons scored the game-winning goal in the 80th minute of play. Taylor Thames started the match in net and recorded four of the Matadors' five saves. Cindy Arteaga and Ashley Cruz had four shots apiece to lead the team.
After three early corner kicks from UCSD to open the first half, the Matadors would control the pace, eventually posting a 9-0 edge in shots over a 24-minute span. Cindy Arteaga and Ashley Cruz both put shots on frame in the first half while Kacie Garrity missed just wide in the 19th minute.
UCSD though had one of the closer looks of the first half when Raquel Kalpakoff hit the crossbar from 16 yards out in the 40th minute. Cindy Arteaga would miss high of the net in the 43rd minute as the game went into intermission scoreless.
The Matadors outshot the Tritons 11-2 in the first half, but the tables turned after halftime. UC San Diego produced 15 shots in the second half compared to CSUN's four while the Tritons earned nine total corner kicks.
Early in the half, CSUN's defense blocked a shot from Courtney Hillard before Thames made a save on a second shot from Natalie Abel off the rebound. Minutes later, the Tritons nearly came away with a goal when Kennedy Carter headed the ball from less than eight yards, but Ashly Torres was able to make a team save near the goal line. Picking up the loose ball, Carter had another look at the net before Thames made a leaping one-handed save.
Thames continued to make strong plays in the front of the net to help keep the game scoreless. She would punch out another shot from Carter in the 71st minute, then Thames won a one-on-one with Hillard in the 73rd minute for a save.
Finally, on its 11th corner kick of the afternoon, the Tritons broke the scoreless tie. Lucy Tang delivered the corner kick deep in front of the goal where Thames would punch the ball out. However, Camryn Borg regained possession and headed a bouncing shot that found the left corner of the net.
Over the final 10 minutes, the Matadors posted a pair of shots but both were off the mark. Cruz took the Matadors' final shot in the 87th minute, which went wide right.
GAME NOTES
UCSD (3-9-6, 2-3-4 Big West) outshot CSUN (2-15-1, 0-8-1 Big West) 17-15 and 6-2 in shots on goal. The Tritons also held a 12-8 edge in corner kicks. Fouls were even with both teams committing seven apiece. UCSD's Talisa Lin saw the yellow card in the 66th minute.
The Matadors' honored their three-member senior class of Taylor Thames, Cindy Arteaga and Gabriela Robles prior to Sunday's match in a ceremony.
The quartet of Angelica Claiborne, Ashly Torres, Kacie Garrity and Robles played the full 90 minutes.
ACCORDING TO COACH CHRISTINE JOHNSON
"We had good possession. I think for us, we really didn't quite execute the game plan in the first half. We wanted to play a little more tempoed and switch the game channel. I don't think we did a great job of that, but it got better in the second half. They had about 12 corners and that's tough for us to defend that constantly. We needed to do a better job in our clearance and make sure we got throw-ins versus corners."
"[Our seniors] have been wonderful. They've been really supportive of the coaching staff. They've all been leaders on and of the field. Their presence is going to be missed. I'm very thankful for all of they've done for the program."
