10/27/2022 10:12:00 PM | Women's Soccer
RIVERSIDE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (3-15-1, 1-8-1 Big West) scored a season-high four times in a 4-2 triumph at UC Riverside (2-9-7, 0-7-3 Big West) in the season finale on Thursday evening at UCR Soccer Stadium. Cindy Arteaga notched her second brace of the season while freshmen Alyssa Edwards and Cailey Jackson scored their first career goals. Taylor Thames had five saves in front of the net.
After a pair of missed shots from UC Riverside, CSUN broke through in the sixth minute of action. Kacie Garrity would intercept the ball with a header that bounced to Arteaga moving to her left. Arteaga took the ball toward the top of the box before sending a shot into the right corner of the net for a CSUN 1-0 lead.
Â
The Matadors were far from done though. In the 13th minute, Garrity set up another scoring opportunity when she crossed a pass from the left wing to the front of the box. Edwards took the pass, made a turn then struck the netting to double the lead.
On the defensive end, Thames made two strong saves in succession near the 21-minute mark to help keep the lead intact. Off a corner kick, Natza Marin found daylight from less than 18 yards, but Thames stopped the shot at the left post. Seconds later, Leyna Wood had a look from near the six-yard mark before Thames made a clean two-handed save from short range.
CSUN continued to apply pressure on the UCR defense throughout the half, tallying 11 shots with seven on goal in the first 45-minute session. With seconds remaining in the period, the Matadors struck again for their third goal of the half. On the play, the Matadors made their way up the field where Cassidy Imperial-Pham would dribble the ball toward the middle of the field before passing ahead to her right to Jackson. After a dribble, Jackson finished the play from inside 10 yards with a goal that hit the left corner of the net.
After intermission, the Matadors went back on the attack leading to their fourth goal. On the play, Arteaga kicked the ball into the left corner where Imperial-Pham corralled the pass. Imperial-Pham then crossed the ball back to Arteaga who created room with a dribble then found the left corner of the net with a bouncing shot.
Later in the half, both sides would lose a player in the 68th minute when Arteaga and Marin were shown red cards following a foul near midfield.
UCR would cut into the Matadors' lead down the stretch of the game, scoring twice off set pieces. In the 70th minute, a UCR corner kick led to its first goal of the night as Alexandra Hargrave found the net at the near post to trim the deficit to 4-1.
Thames made a pair of late saves, but the Highlanders struck again in the final minute of play. Off a set piece near midfield, Jordan Weiss delivered a long ball toward a scrum inside the box. Spenser Gonzales would flick the ball backward and just out of the reach of Thames for a late goal.

GAME NOTES
UC Riverside outshot CSUN 19-14, but the Matadors had a 9-7 edge in shots on goal. UCR also had 13 of the 15 corner kicks in the match. A total of 26 fouls were called with CSUN whistled for 18 of them. In addition to Cindy Arteaga and Natza Marin seeing red cards, Miaya Sykes, Taylor Thames, Cailey Jackson, Mckenzie Moore and Emma Gonzalez were shown yellow cards.
Arteaga finishes the season with nine goals, the most by a Matador since Cynthia Sanchez had 11 in 2015. Her nine goals are tied with Kristy Krohn (9), Brianna Monka (2005) and Farryn Townley (2009) for the second-most goals scored in a season in team history. Arteaga also pushed her career goal tally to 12, which ranks eighth-best in the record books.
Kacie Garrity and Cassidy Imperial-Pham became the first Matadors to record two assists in a game since Alyssa Aguilar had two helpers at Portland State on Aug. 26, 2018.
ACCORDING TO COACH CHRISTINE JOHNSON
"This performance was what the coaching staff saw early on in the preseason. I think everything came together tonight. Obviously, we worked pretty hard this week to prep and make sure we end this year on a high note. This group hasn't changed. For us, we are still building. It was a rebuilding year because we're young. It was good to see some players step in and fill some roles tonight since we're a little banged up.
"For us, we are looking toward the spring because we are going to develop quite a bit. I also think that some of the freshmen are starting to understand the system and just need more time."
