CSUN Closes Season at UC Riverside on Thursday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer wraps up the 2022 schedule on Thursday night at UC Riverside. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
ABOUT LAST WEEK
The Matadors (2-15-1, 0-8-1 Big West) closed their home schedule with Senior Day last Sunday. CSUN would fall in the match to UC San Diego, 1-0, as the Tritons scored the game-winning goal in the 80th minute. UCSD outshot CSUN by a slight 17-15 margin, but the Tritons held a 15-4 edge in the second half. Taylor Thames got the start and collected four saves while CSUN had a team save as well thanks to Ashly Torres.
CSUN's 1-0 defeat was the Matadors third loss by that score over the last four matches. The Matadors have played in seven total one-goal games this year, going 1-6 in those contests.
MATADOR HEADLINES
CSUN honored its three-member senior class in Sunday's home finale against UCSD. Forward Cindy Arteaga, defender Gabriela Robles and goalkeeper Taylor Thames were honored before the match as each started versus the Tritons. Arteaga had four shots with one on goal while Robles played the full 90 minutes on the backline. Thames started her second-straight match, posting all four of her saves in the second half.
Arteaga hopes to close her Matador career in strong fashion when the team wraps up the season at UC Riverside. The CSUN forward has a career-high seven goals this season to go with 15 points. Her seven goals are second in The Big West while her point total is third. Arteaga also has second-most shots with 73 in the league. In CSUN history, Arteaga is tied for 13th place with Heather Schou (1995-97) on the career scoring list with 10 goals while she ranks third in career shots (152).
Robles will conclude a five-year career with the Matadors this week. Joining the program in 2018, Robles has started 58 of 74 matches with the Matadors and contributed to 16 shutouts over that span. She was a part of the Matadors' Big West runner-up finish in 2019 when CSUN posted 11 shutouts that season. Robles has two goals and four points in her CSUN career.
A two-sport athlete at CSUN, Thames has appeared in 15 career matches since 2019. Thames has five wins and three shutouts in her career while she has 55 saves in seven matches this season. In addition to her time at CSUN, Thames has been a member of the Matador track & field team as a sprinter since 2020.
CSUN has sported one of the youngest teams in The Big West this season with 14 freshman making their debut. In total, 16 newcomers have appeared in a match this season. Freshman Cami Alarcon has played the most times of any of the newcomers with 17 appearances through 18 matches while freshman goalkeeper Hayden Mauldin has started the most (11). Behind Mauldin's 990 minutes in net, Jackie Victorio has seen the most minutes among the first-year field players (734). Freshman Cassidy Imperial-Pham has the most points with three including a goal.
A six-year midfielder and forward, Ashley Cruz has the Matadors' two other goals this season to go with two assists. Her six points are second-best on the team while she has recorded 21 shots with 11 on goal. Cruz has one of the Matadors' two game-winning goals this season.
SERIES HISTORY
CSUN leads UC Riverside 14-7 in the all-time series while the teams have split 10 matches in Riverside. The Matadors come in with a six-match winning streak in the series after posting a 1-0 victory at Matador Soccer Field last season. CSUN has won two in a row over the Highlanders in Riverside with the most recent win coming in 2019 (3-1). UCR's last win over CSUN was in 2015 by a 1-0 score.
SCOUTING UC RIVERSIDE
The Highlanders come in with a 2-8-7 overall record with a 0-6-3 mark in Big West play. The team fell twice on the road last week to Hawai'i (2-1) and UC Davis (3-1). UCR's last win came on Aug. 25 in a 4-1 victory at Portland State. The Highlanders are 1-4-4 on the season at home. Head coach Nat Gonzalez is in his 11th season leading the Highlander program.
Alexandra Hargrave has a team-high six goals, four assists and 16 points this season while Leyna Wood has hit the net five times and recorded 11 points. The trio of McKenzie Moore, Kameron Henry and Charisma Benitez have two goals apiece while six others have scored once. As a team, UCR is tied for fourth in The Big West in goals with 23. In net, Cassia Souza has seen the most minutes in net (832:20) while posting 37 saves and a 1.30 GAA.
