FULLERTON, Calif.— Jack Rhead's second goal of the season in the 73rd minute sent CSUN past Cal State Fullerton 1-0 in the regular season Big West men's soccer finale for both clubs Saturday night at Titan Stadium.
Levin Gerhardt attempted three shots in the first half with one save by Tetsuya Kadono in the 15th minute. A Cal State Fullerton fury late in the final four minutes of the first half resulted in four shots with Cooper Wenzel making two saves on blasts from in front of the net. Ethan Benham's attempt with 14 seconds to go in the opening stanza was saved by Kadono. Both goalies made three saves in the first half as the score remained 0-0 heading into halftime.
Five minutes into the second half, David Diaz's effort went wide for the Matadors. CSUN earned back-to-back corners in the 54th and 55th minutes, but the Titans successfully defended the set pieces on both occasions. Gerhardt was high with his attempt during the 57th. Jamar Ricketts took a long shot in the 67th minute that went high.
Charly Anguiano took Cal State Fullerton's shot of the second half in the 73rd minute. His long attempt just missed. On the ensuing possession, Diaz found Rhead on a counterattack. He dribbled and he scored from just inside the 18, going right to left to break the seal.
Three minutes later, the Titans earned a free kick from 20 yards out. Tyler Marquez put the ball on the net where Wenzel made the save in the center of his goal. Diaz had a shot saved by Kadono. The rebound found Ricketts who put the ball on goal, and it was deflected over the Cal State Fullerton endline, resulting in a corner kick. The Titans defended successfully.
Rhead's blast in the 84th was saved out of bounds by Kadono. CSUN received a corner which was turned away by Cal State Fullerton. A Matador foul resulted in a Titans' free kick just outside the 18 in the 87th minute. Jessy Sotelo's flick went high, giving CSUN a goal kick.
The Matadors would go on to win the game, knocking the Titans out of Big West Tournament contention. Cal State Fullerton ended in a tie for sixth with Sacramento State (12 points) but the Titans (8-6-5 overall) did not have the tiebreaker with the Hornets as Sacramento State defeated Cal State Fullerton earlier this season.
