
CSUN Defeats UC Davis 3-2 to advance in Big West Championship

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN scored twice in a 1:45 span in the second half to defeat UC Davis 3-2 in the first round of the Big West Men's Soccer Championship Wednesday night.
The Aggies, the fifth seed, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute when off a scramble in front, Max Glasser's pass was deflected to Ethan Hoard who scored in front of the Matadors' goal. CSUN, the fourth seed, tied the match in the 40th minute when Edson Palos took a Jamar Ricketts' pass and scored off his left foot from 10 yards out.
The game-winning sequence began at Marvin Arias sent a pass to Dylan Gonzalez. Gonzalez's cross into the box found Jack Rhead who converted for his third goal of the season at 51:12. The final CSUN goal occurred on the ensuing Matador possession. Ricketts took possession in the CSUN end. He dribbled the length of the field and sent a blast from 20 yards into the upper right corner of the net.
Cooper Wenzel made three saves over seven minutes (73-80) before the Aggies cut the lead to one at 86:31. Zachary Batchelder took a free kick that went into the CSUN wall. The rebound came back out to Batchelder who scored from just inside the 18. A last-gasp attempt by Sean Bilter with 15 seconds remaining went wide right for the Aggies as the Matadors advanced to the Big West Tournament semifinals.
THE STATS
UC Davis outshot CSUN 15-9, 9-5 on goal. CSUN posted eight corner kicks compared to seven for UC Davis. Ricketts posted his second three-point performance of the season as he tallied his team-leading fifth goal of the year. Palos, a redshirt sophomore, scored his first career goal against the Aggies. Wenzel tied his career high with seven saves.

CSUN last scored three goals in a match on Sept. 29, 2021, when CSUN fell 4-3 to CSU Bakersfield…the victory broke a four-match CSUN losing streak to UC Davis and broke a 282-minute scoring drought to the Aggies dating back to the 2018 Big West Tournament when the Matador lost 3-2 to the Aggies…CSUN advances to the Big West semifinals for the first time since 2019...CSUN's victory was the 215th of head coach Terry Davila's career (215-179-59)...UC Davis finishes 2022 with a 5-9-4 record.
