CSUN Unlucky in 1-0 Loss to Hawai'i
10/6/2022 9:26:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---A goal in the 49th minute proved to be the difference in CSUN's 1-0 loss to Hawai'i on Thursday at Matador Soccer Field. CSUN would outshoot Hawai'i on the night and have two shots hit the frame of the goal in the second half, but could come up with the equalizer. In goal, Hayden Mauldin recorded six saves.
In the first half, Hawai'i nearly cracked the scoring column in the ninth minute when Kelci Sumida had her shot saved by Mauldin in front of the right corner of the post. Seconds later, Sumida put up a second shot, this time it was Samantha Healy who got a head on the ball to make a team save.
Mauldin made four saves for the Matadors to help keep the Rainbow Wahine of the scoreboard while CSUN's defense held firm despite Hawai'i holding a 6-3 edge in shots. Stevie Reynolds took the last shot of the first half, missing high of the net in the 43rd minute.
After intermission, CSUN came out quickly and would pick up a shot on goal from Cindy Arteaga that Lauren Marquez punched out of bounds. Jackie Victorio also had a solid look for CSUN from 18 yards, but the shot went high.
CSUN seemingly had control of its possession in the 49th minute, but a costly turnover on the backline led to a Hawai'i scoring opportunity. Krista Peterson swiped the ball and made a run toward the right corner of the box. Peterson deposited a low shot that found the right corner of the net, away from the outstretched hands of Mauldin.
Looking up at 1-0 deficit, the Matadors quickly went on the offensive. After Yoshi Rubalcava missed wide, CSUN picked up two near goals off a set piece. Taking the corner kick, Ashly Torres sent the ball toward the middle of the box where Gabriela Robles headed the ball off the crossbar. Moments later, Arteaga crossed the ball toward the opposite post where Ashley Cruz hit the right post on a short attempt.
The Matadors were called for offside in the 66th minute as Arteaga deflected the ball off a defender to an open Cruz in front of the net, but the whistle ended the potential scoring threat.
Minutes later, Marquez would save shots off the feet of Arteaga and Rubalcava near the 69-minute mark, keeping the score at 1-0.
Victorio had CSUN's last attempt of the night in the 81st minute from deep outside of the box, but the shot went just high of the crossbar.
GAME NOTES
CSUN finished with a 15-12 edge in shots and 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Matadors also earned six of the nine corner kicks. In the foul department, CSUN was whistled for eight while Hawai'i had seven. The Matadors' Hayden Mauldin and the Rainbow Wahine's Zoe Park and Emily Cottrell were each shown yellow cards.
Defender Sami Kolin made her first appearance since Sept. 3 on the backline and played the full 90 minutes while Samantha Healy played in her second match of the year and made her first career start on defense. Along with Kolin, Angelica Claiborne, Cindy Arteaga, Ashly Torres, Jackie Victorio and Kacie Garrity also played 90 minutes on Thursday. Yoshi Rubalcava led the Matadors with five shots with two on goal.
ACCORDING TO COACH CHRISTINE JOHNSON
"Obviously, we're struggling right now. This was a game that we should have won. I think Sami [Kolin] did a good job. We stuck her in and she did very well with the pressure and speed of play."
"Rome wasn't built in a day and we're pretty young. For the group, we continue to remind them that these failures are really good lessons for us. We've just got to get better."
