LONG BEACH, Calif. – The CSUN women's volleyball went five sets for the second straight night but came out with the same result as Long Beach State overcame a two-set deficit to defeat the Matadors, 3-2 in a Big West match Saturday night at the Walter Pyramid.
CSUN put up 20.0 team blocks in the loss which is the most by the Matador team since 2007 and fifth-best in the program's rally scoring era. Senior Nicole Nevarez led CSUN with 15 kills, hitting .256 while junior Taylor Hunter put up a career-high 12 blocks but the Matadors slipped to 6-12 overall and 1-5 in The Big West after the 21-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-17, 15-6 win by the Beach.
KEY STATISTICS
• Nevarez rounded out her night with eight digs and a career-high seven blocks while Hunter added six kills (.167).
• Taylor Orshoff chipped in eight kills (.217) and matched her career-high with five blocks including two solo stuffs.

COACH JOHN PRICE SAID
"We played great defense and hit well for stretches over the first two sets and and then we start making crucial mistakes. I think not having Lauryn (Anderson) on the court hurt us but we still had chances to beat two good teams this weekend and didn't take advantage of the opportunity. We had chances to make plays in the final three sets, we didn't make enough and Long Beach did and that was the difference in the match."
SET 1
The Matadors forced an early Long Beach timeout after racing out to a 7-2 lead following a pair of Nevarez kills. A 6-0 Beach run out of the timeout gave the hosts an 8-7 lead before a Barron kill ended the run. Neither team led by more than one until a Hunter kill gave the Matadors a 14-12 edge. CSUN extended the lead to four at 21-17 when the hosts battled back to within one at 21-22. But Beach service and hitting errors over the next two points set up set point for the Matadors who would cash in on a block by Nevarez and Abigail Macias.
SET 2
After hitting out-hitting Long Beach .375 to .233 in set one, CSUN hit .250 to the Beach's .132 in taking set two 25-23. The Matadors overcame an early 4-2 deficit to take an 8-7 lead following a Barron kill. CSUN would eventually lead by as many as three at 14-11 when a Long Beach attack went out. Despite seeing their lead shrink to one before the Beach knotted the score at 23-23, the Matadors would not surrender the lead and got a kill from Hunter and a co-block from Macias and Magdalena Juric on set point.
SET 3
Long Beach took control of the third set early on, taking an 8-2 lead when Barron's attack was blocked. The Matadors battled back to within four at 9-5 forcing a Long Beach timeout. CSUN would get as close as three (13-10) following one of two Cederlind aces before the Beach outscored the Matadors 6-1 over the next seven points to open up a 19-11 cushion. CSUN would only get within six the remainder of the set as Long Beach won going away 25-17.
SET 4
With the score tied 4-4 early in the fourth, the hosts went on a 10-3 run to open up a sizable 14-7 lead. Still down seven at 18-11, the Matadors put together a 3-1 run to get as close as 19-14 but Long Beach would pull away down the stretch for another 25-17 win setting up the decisive fifth set.
SET 5
The Beach claimed four of the first five points before a Nevarez kill pulled CSUN within two at 5-3. Three straight Long Beach points extended the lead to 8-3 before another Nevarez kill kept the margin at four. But a Morgan Chacon kill and a Long Beach block pushed the lead back to six (10-4) and the Beach would pull away for the 15-6 win.
The Matadors return home next week to open up a three-match homestand against UC Davis Friday at 7 p.m.
