FORÂ STARTERS
Coming off a split on its two-match homestand last week, the CSUN women's volleyball team (8-20, 3-13 Big West) opens up a three-match road trip Thursday at UC Riverside (4-21, 2-14 Big West) at 6 p.m. The Matadors also travel to UC Davis on Saturday at 3 p.m. and UC Santa Barbara next Tuesday (Nov. 22) before closing the season at home against Hawai'i on Nov. 26. The Matadors snapped an eight-match skid with a straight-set sweep over Cal State Fullerton last Saturday.

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
UC Riverside (4-21, 2-14 Big West) has lost eight straight matches since defeating the Matadors on Oct. 15. The Highlanders dropped matches to CSU Bakersfield (3-1) and Cal Poly (3-0) at home last weekend. Mylei Vargas-Deason led UCR with eight kills against the Mustangs on 33 swings.
Series: Friday's match is the 84th meeting all-time between CSUN and UC Riverside with the Matadors holding a commanding 61-22 lead in the series. The Highlanders snapped a four-match CSUN win streak with a four-set win in Northridge on Oct. 15. CSUN is 22-10 all-time in Riverside.
UC Davis (12-14, 7-9 Big West), which hosts UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, has won three of its last four after splitting home matches against Cal Poly and CSU Bakersfield last weekend. Senior Josephine Ough had 11 kills as the Aggies picked up their first home sweep of the season over CSUB last Saturday.
Series: Saturday's match is the 38th meeting all-time between CSUN and UC Davis with the Matadors holding a 22-15 edge in the series. CSUN has won four straight in the series, including a five-set win in Northridge on Oct. 14. The Matadors are 9-8 all-time against the Aggies in Davis.
NEVAREZ MOVES UP CSUN CAREER KILLS LIST
With the ninth kill against UC Irvine on Oct. 29, senior Nicole Nevarez became the 14th player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills. With a team-high 275 kills this season, Nevarez has moved up into 12th place on the all-time CSUN kills list with 1,036. She has passed Ana Khristich (1,004 kills) and Nancy Ma (1,030 kills) this season. Nevarez heads into Friday's match having appeared in 112 matches and 420 sets in her career while posting 1,036 career kills on 3,170 career attempts to go with 812 career digs, 194 career blocks and 72 career aces. She now ranks eighth in the CSUN all-time top-10 in career attacks and is fifth in the CSUN Rally Scoring era top-10 in solo blocks (49), seventh in attacks and ninth in kills. Her best season offensively was in 2019 when she connected for 285 kills while she set a season-high for digs with 245 in 2021. This season, Nevarez is hitting a season-high .214 on a team-high 856 swings.

BARRON LEADS BIG WEST WITH FIVE TRIPLE-DOUBLESÂ
After posting her first career triple-double in CSUN's five-set win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sept. 16, Carisa Barron has notched four triple-doubles in 14 Big West matches. The only Big West women's volleyball player with multiple triple-doubles this season (UC Riverside's Tayler Hifo has one), Barron has three triples in her last eight matches.Â
The sophomore from Bakersfield, who notched her fifth of the season against CSU Bakersfield (11 kills-10 digs-17 assists) on Nov. 5, has emerged as one of CSUN's top offensive threats this season. She ranks third on the Matadors with 215 kills (2.01 kps) while also averaging a team-high 5.18 assists per set and 2.14 digs per set. With 629 attacks this season, she has taken the most swings from the setter spot since Sydney Gedryn had 406 attacks in 2012.
CSUN QUICK SETS
Freshman Breanna Mitchell served a career-high four aces to go with her first collegiate kill in the Matadors' 3-0 win over Cal State Fullerton. Other notable stats from the victory over the Titans included three solo blocks by Magdalena Juric, the first career kill by Layla Cederlind and two aces by Elizabeth Gannon which matches her career-high ... freshman Kaia Kanan made her first two collegiate starts against Long Beach State and Cal State Fullerton last week ... With a career-high 172 digs this season, Cederlind has moved past the 200 digs total for her career ... Lauryn Anderson and Taylor Hunter are in a tight battle for the team lead in blocks as Hunter leads the team with 90, one better than Anderson's total of 89. Anderson ranks second to Nevarez in solo blocks (26-22) while Taylor Orshoff has 10 ... Anderson has also scooped up a career-high 59 digs this season.Â
PRICE NAMED CSUN'SÂ DIRECTOR OF WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
John Price was named Director of Women's Volleyball at CSUN in June of 2022. He will oversee both the indoor and beach volleyball programs. Price returned to the CSUN indoor program in 2021 where he served as an assistant on interim head coach Susie Terrusa's staff. Price previously as an assistant coach on Jeff Stork's women's volleyball coaching staff from 2012-2015. He also served one season as the head coach of the CSUN women's volleyball team in 1993, compiling a record of 12-17 as an NCAA Independent.
Price's CSUN resume also includes 12 seasons as the head coach of the nationally-ranked Matador men's volleyball team (1986-1997) where he amassed an overall record of 194-158 (.551) leading CSUN to a 23-10 record and a berth in the 1993 NCAA Championship match where the Matadors fell to UCLA. Price then moved on to CSU Bakersfield women's volleyball and remains the winningest coach in program history. He posted a career record of 232-169 (.579) over 14 seasons, leading the Roadrunners to a 28-4 overall record in his first season. Price was also at the helm of the CSUB program when the school made the transition from NCAA Division II to Division I status. Price's 2008 squad was the first Roadrunner team in any sport to post a winning record (18-15) in the school's Division I era.
LOOKING AHEAD
After road matches at UC Riverside and UC Davis this weekend, the Matadors complete the 2022 road schedule Tuesday at UC Santa Barbara. CSUN then returns home on Nov. 26 to host Big West leaders Hawai'i as the second half of a doubleheader with CSUN women's basketball.
