Matadors Visit Boise State to Close November

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball (1-4) wraps up the first month of the season with another road test as the Matadors visit Boise State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. PT/7 p.m. MT. The game will stream on the Mountain West Network while Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister have the call in an audio broadcast at GoMatadors.com/Radio.
ABOUT LAST WEEK
CSUN went 0-2 at the SoCal Challenge held at JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano last week. The Matadors would fall in heartbreaking fashion to Tennessee State 74-73 last Monday before dropping a 82-66 decision to Central Michigan on Wednesday afternoon.
The Matadors trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half against Tennessee State before rallying to take a one-point lead at the break on a layup from Dionte Bostick. In the second half, CSUN fell behind by eight with six minutes remaining before rallying again. Dearon Tucker made two free throws with 1:05 remaining to give the Matadors a one-point lead but the Tigers scored on the ensuing possession. Bostick, who scored 10 points in the second half, missed the game-winner in the final seconds. Bostick finished with a game-high 24 points while Atin Wright had 14 and De'Sean Allen-Eikens poured in 12.
On Wednesday, CSUN held a lead with four minutes to play in the first half but Central Michigan ended the period on a 9-0 run. CSUN closed the gap to as little as three in the second half before Central Michigan pulled away for a double-digit victory. The Matadors would struggle with their shot for most of the afternoon, shooting 35.0 percent for the game. Wright had a team-high 21 points and Allen-Eikens chipped in with 13 points. Bostick, who had an off-night offensively, still had eight rebounds and six assists to go with seven points.
MATADOR HEADLINES
Dionte Bostick comes into the week ranked seventh in The Big West in scoring at 15.6 points per game while Atin Wright is ranked 10th in the league at 14.2 points per game. Onyi Eyisi checks in at sixth in The Big West in rebounds per game (7.4). As a team, the Matadors are ranked fourth in the conference in rebounds per game (39.4).
De'Sean Allen-Eikens has made a quick impression in his first season at CSUN, averaging in double figures in scoring at 10.4 points per game. Allen-Eikens is also shooting 47.2 percent from the field (17-for-36) and 41.7 percent from 3-point range (5-for-12).
In addition to leading the team in scoring, Bostick is also topping the squad in assists per game (3.0) while Ethan Igbanugo is a close second in the category at 2.8 per game.
After a road heavy schedule in November that consisted of five of six games played away from home, the Matadors will play four of their next five inside the friendly confines of Premier America Credit Union Arena. CSUN begins December with a meeting with Whittier (Dec. 4) before hitting the road for the final time in non-conference play at Fresno State (Dec. 7). The Matadors then play three-straight at home against Northern Colorado (Dec. 10), Idaho (Dec. 19) and San Diego (Dec. 22).
SERIES HISTORY
Boise State is 9-0 against CSUN in the all-time series dating back to the Matadors' inaugural Division I season. CSUN has made six trips to Boise in its history with the last trip taking place in 2019 in a 103-72 Broncos victory. The teams squared off last season in Northridge as the Matadors fell by a 74-48 margin.
SCOUTING BOISE STATE
The Broncos have gone 4-2 to start the season. Boise State won their third-straight game on Saturday against Utah Valley 87-69 at home. The team has a pair of Pac-12 wins as well this season versus the likes of Washington State (71-61) and Colorado (68-55). The Broncos won the regular season and Mountain West Conference tournament title last season. The team was picked to finish third in the Mountain West by the conference's head coaches this season. Head coach Leon Rice is in his 13th season at the helm of the program.
Four Broncos are scoring in double figures led by Tyson Degenhart at 15.3 points per game. Marcus Shaver, Jr. is scoring 14.3 points per game while Max Rice and Chibuzo Agbo are averaging 11.2 and 10.3 points, respectively. Shaver tops the Broncos in rebounding (9.0 RPG) and assists (4.2 APG). As a team, Boise State has held opponents to 59.2 points per game while the team scores 67.3 points per game.
