NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - CSUN men's volleyball has announced its 2023 schedule as the Matadors will play a 25-match regular-season schedule which includes 14 home matches and 10 Big West Conference matches.
"As always, we're preparing to play the best teams in the country night in and night out," said CSUN head coach Jeff Campbell. "The competition - at all levels of collegiate men's volleyball - is getting so much better and our team has to be ready to go right out of the gate. We know we have to bring our "A" game every time we step on the floor and play at a high level. To be the best, we have to play the best and this schedule does that."
After missing the UCSB Invitational in 2022, the first time in 18 seasons CSUN did not participate at the Gauchos' annual event, the Matadors return in 2023 to open the season with three matches in Goleta. CSUN will meet UCLA, USC and Lincoln Memorial over the three-day tournament which runs from Jan. 5-7.
CSUN opens the home schedule the following Friday (Jan. 13) against Cal Lutheran at 7 p.m. The five-match homestand inside Premier America Credit Union Arena continues against The Master's University on Jan. 18, Menlo College on Jan. 20 and USC on Jan. 25 before the Matadors close the opening month of the season against UCLA on Jan. 27.
February will feature six more non-conference matches before the start of Big West play gets underway at the end of the month. February opens with home matches against Vanguard (Feb. 1) and Stanford (Feb. 3) before CSUNÂ travels to the East Coast for the first time since 2011. The Matadors will play three matches throughout New Jersey, taking on Princeton (Feb. 8), NJIT (Feb. 10) and Farleigh Dickinson (Feb. 11).Â
"We usually try to do a trip to the Midwest but this season we're paying back some of the schools that have come out to the West Coast to play us in recent years," said Campbell. "It will be great for our guys to see the East Coast."
CSUN closes February with a home match against Westcliff on Feb. 22 before opening the Big West season on the road at UC San Diego on Feb. 24. The Matadors travel to Stanford (Mar. 3) before Big West play resumes against the Tritons in Northridge on Mar. 16.
March concludes with a two-match homestand against two-time defending national champions Hawai'i (Mar. 24-25) and a road match at UC Irvine on Mar. 31. The Matadors then host the Anteaters on Apr. 1 before the remainder of April features home-and-home series against Long Beach State (Apr. 7-8) and UC Santa Barbara (Apr. 14-15).
"It's been four years running that the Big West has won the national championship and it's arguably the premier men's volleyball league in the country," added Campbell. "We're preparing to play the best teams in the country with our goal of playing for a national championship. And to win a national championship, you have to beat the best to be the best and that's always our goal."
After two years in Hawai'i, the 2023 Outrigger Big West Men's Volleyball Championship will be played at UC Irvine's Bren Events Center. The fifth incarnation of the postseason championship opens on April 20 with a pair of quarterfinal matches. Semifinal matches will be played Apr. 21 with the Big West Championship match slated for Saturday, Apr. 22. The 2023 NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship will be contested May 4-5 in Fairfax, Va. on the campus of George Mason.
