Barron, Mitchell Named to 2022 All-Big West Team

IRVINE, Calif. - CSUN had a pair of student-athletes named to The Big West 2022 Women's Volleyball All-Conference Team Wednesday as sophomore Carisa Barron earned honorable mention accolades and Breanna Mitchell was named to the All-Freshman Team as the conference announced its postseason awards.
Barron, a 5-11 setter from Bakersfield, earned honorable mention recognition from the conference's 11 head coaches. She led the Matadors in assists with 624 (5.07 aps) while also ranking third in both kills (253) and digs (272) and fourth in blocks (57).Â
After posting her first career triple-double in CSUN's five-set win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sept. 16, Barron added five more triple-doubles in 20 Big West matches. The only Big West women's volleyball player with multiple triple-doubles this season (UC Riverside's Tayler Hifo had one), Barron had five triples in her last 14 matches of the season.
Barron also emerged as one of CSUN's top offensive threats this season. She finished third on the Matadors with a career-high 253 kills (2.06 kps) while also averaging a team-high 5.07 assists per set along with 2.21 digs per set. With 744 total attacks this season, she had the most swings from the setter spot since Sydney Gedryn had 406 attacks in 2012.
"Carisa worked really hard between her freshman season and this season and it really paid off this year," said head coach John Price. "Her setting was much improved and she gave us quality swings all season long. Her defense was dramatically improved and about three weeks into the season we started using her as a right-side attacker and she became one of our more effective hitters. She had a great year as a setter and a great year as a hitter so we're really happy for her to get recognized."Â
Mitchell, a 5-6 libero from Temecula, was named the seven-member Big West All-Freshman Team. A two-time Big West Defensive and Freshman of the Week (Sept. 19, Nov. 21), she led the Matadors with 513 digs which ranked fourth in the Big West. Mitchell wound up averaging 4.17 digs per set over 32 matches while averaging 3.92 digs per set in 20 conference matches.
She equaled the program's rally-scoring-era single-match record of 34 digs in CSUN's 3-2 win at UC Riverside on Nov. 17. That total is also the fourth-best in school history overall, and tied for second-most in a Big West contest in 2022. With 513 digs, Mitchell had the most digs by a Matador since Cindy Ortiz had 556 in 2012. She also 33 aces and 104 aces to round out her first collegiate season.
"Bre was great from a performance standpoint," said Price. "She passed almost 900 balls in serve receive this year which is significantly more than anyone in the conference. The fact that she covered so much court and passed so many balls in serve receive was impressive. Her serve became a weapon for us in the second half of the season and her ability to dig hard-driven balls was great so she was the total package this year. She's a great a teammate and happy to see her get the recognition from the head coaches."
CSUNÂ finished the 2022Â season with an overall record of 9-23Â and tied for ninth in the Big West at 4-16.
