Matadors Wrap Up Triton Invitational at 2-2

LA JOLLA, Calif.---CSUN Water Polo (3-3) finished off the Triton Invitational with another split on Sunday at Canyonview Aquatic Center. The Matadors began the day with a 17-9 loss to No. 16 UC Santa Barbara before knocking off No. 19 San Diego State 11-10. CSUN concluded the event in 11th place.
It was another big day in the pool for Dorottya Telek who notched seven combined goals while Anna Pal had five total in the two matches. Piper McCulloch had 19 combined saves on Sunday.

GAME ONE RECAP
Telek opened up the scoring via a penalty shot at the 5:32 mark of the first period, and would score again two minutes later to put CSUN ahead 2-1. However, UCSB controlled the final three minutes, scoring three times. After a UCSB goal from Aidan Flynn to start the second period, the teams traded goals over the remaining eight minutes. CSUN pulled to within two goals twice after scores from Shelby Hovanesian and Jessica Matkovich but could not pull closer. Caitlyn Snyder scored two goals in the second period to help UCSB maintain an 8-5 lead.

The Gauchos would stretch their lead further in the third period behind two early goals from Nina Munson and Sarah Owens. Kylee Jansen and Pal helped carry the offensive load for CSUN, but UCSB countered with four goals of its own to take a 12-7 advantage. In the fourth period, Synder netted her fourth goal of the match while Munson added another to help put the game out of reach for the Gauchos. Telek would complete the hat trick with a tally in the final quarter.

GAME TWO RECAP
The Matadors flipped the script in the afternoon game, finishing in strong fashion in the first quarter. Telek put the Matadors on the scoreboard at the 4:08 mark before Pal scored on a power play. Jansen would also score on a 6-on-5 advantage while Telek notched a late first-quarter goal to stretch the lead to 4-0. Telek would complete the hat trick at the 6:56 mark of the second quarter then Jansen made it a six-goal lead for CSUN a minute later. The Matadors held the Aztecs scoreless until the 5:37 point of the second quarter. San Diego would score three of the final four goals of the second quarter but CSUN still held a 7-3 lead after 16 minutes.Â
Telek's fourth goal of the match opened up the scoring in the third but the Aztecs would chip away at the lead in the period. A 4-0 SDSU run in the third quarter trimmed the CSUN lead to 8-7 before a timely tally from Helena Sandhagen slowed the Aztec rally. San Diego State pulled to within one again to start the fourth quarter at 9-8 but Jansen answered back on the next possession for CSUN. The Matadors capitalized on an Aztec exclusion to pick up an insurance goal from Jansen with 4:49 left to play. CSUN would manage the clock in the remaining minutes as the Aztecs picked up two late goals but could not come away with the equalizer.
In front of the cage, McCulloch played the full 32 minutes in the match, tallying 13 saves.

GAME NOTES
Telek has scored in each of the Matadors' six matches this season and has 20 totals on the season. She also finished with two assists in each contest. Pal and Hovanesian had two assists apiece in the San Diego State match.
The Matadors' win over San Diego State was the team's second win over a top-25 team this season.
