2/19/2022 1:45:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 24 CSUN Water Polo (3-4, 0-1 Big West) fell to No. 7 UC Irvine (9-3, 1-0 Big West) 19-5 on Saturday in the Big West Conference opener at Matador Pool. Anna Pal led the Matadors with two goals in the match to go with a steal. The Anteaters led from start-to-finish to spoil the Matadors' first game played at Matador Pool since Feb. 29, 2020.
UCI jumped on the Matadors from the start, scoring in the second minute of play when Jessica Lynch scored on a power play. The Anteaters doubled their lead 35 seconds later and netted a third goal with 4:08 on the clock on a tally from Elena Flynn. CSUN drew an exlusion with 2:24 left to play but could not come away with a goal while the Anteaters took advantage with their fourth goal, this time from Isabel Rack.
CSUN would dig a 7-0 hole in the second period before cracking the scoring column at the 5:11 mark on a goal from Valeria Martinez. Jessica Matkovich also found the back of the net on a power play in the second period, which cut the UCI lead to 8-2. However, the Anteaters ended the period on a 4-1 run to take a 12-3 lead after 16 minutes.
Rack and Nioka Thomas added to the Anteater lead with goals to kick off the third quarter as CSUN would not hit the net until the 1:47 mark of the period when Pal scored. Helena Sandhagen closed the third period with a goal with 28 seconds on the clock but the Matadors looked up at a 15-5 deficit.
The Anteaters bookended the game with another 4-0 quarter with their last three goals coming in the final three minutes. Six UCI players scored multiple goals in the match with Rack leading the way with a game-high three.
Tatum Scarry had two assists for CSUN while Nicole Thomas, Dorottya Telek and Kylee Jansen had one assist apiece. In net, Piper McCulloch started the match and had five saves while Meghan Lopez chipped in with five saves of her own.
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"It had been 720 days since we last played a home game so it was really fun to compete in front of our home crowd. UC Irvine gave us some good reps in the front court that will definitely help prepare us for next weekend's tournament."
UP NEXT
CSUN will play four games over two days at the Tina Finali Tournament hosted by Cal Lutheran from Feb. 25-26. On day one, CSUN will take on Fresno Pacific at 10:30 a.m. and Chapman at 3:30 p.m.
