#23 CSUN Water Polo Posts Two Wins on Day One of Tina Finali Tournament

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.---No. 23 CSUN Water Polo (5-4) opened up the Tina Finali Tournament with an 11-7 win over Fresno Pacific and a 19-4 triumph over Chapman on Friday at the Tina Finali Memorial Tournament. Anna Pal paced the Matadors with five goals on the day while Dorottya Telek and Kylee Jansen had four apiece. Meghan Lopez had 12 saves while Piper McCulloch notched eight in front of the cage.
GAME 1 RECAP
Fresno Pacific jumped on the Matadors with three consecutive goals at the outset before Pal scored back-to-back times to cut the deficit to 3-2. Jansen would even the match up on a power play late in the first period. Tatiana Smeltzer gave the Matadors their first lead with a tally at the 5:19 mark of the second period. CSUN would lead 5-3 near the three-minute mark but Madison Jacques cut the deficit to one on a 6-on-5 possession.
Neither side could crack the scoring column until the four-minute mark of the third period when Shelby Hovanesian pushed the lead to 6-4. The Matadors would dominate on the defensive end of the third period, holding the Firebirds without a goal while CSUN stretched its lead to 8-4 on goals from Tatum Scarry and Helena Sandhagen. Jansen completed a 4-0 CSUN run with a goal at the 5:44 mark of the fourth period. Fresno Pacific ended its scoring drought with three goals in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to 10-7 but would not get any closer.

GAME 2 RECAP
The Matadors led from start-to-finish in the nightcap on Friday against Chapman. Pal opened up the scoring with a goal in the opening minute before Jansen doubled the lead a minute later. CSUN would score five times in the period with two goals coming from Pal until Chapman's Charlene Ma ended the scoring drought for her team. Nicole Thomas scored back-to-back times near the six-minute mark of the second period before Kelsey Meyers, Alexis Smith and Jessica Matkovich also notched goals of their own. Jansen would end the half with another tally, pushing the lead to 11-1.
Telek had two goals to kick off the third period before the Panthers scored three of the next four goals to pull to within 14-4. However, Ally Long's goal for Chapman at the 2:47 mark of the third period would be her team's last of the afternoon. CSUN scored five unanswered goals in the final period with Telek picking up two more goals.
