#23 CSUN Water Polo Splits on Final Day of Tina Finali Tournament

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif---No. 23 CSUN Water Polo played a pair of close battles to wrap up the Tina Finali Tournament on Saturday. The Matadors split their two matches to finish 3-1 for the weekend. The Matadors defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 11-9 before falling to No. 22 LIU 14-11. Dorottya Telek tallied 11 goals combined in the two matches while Kylee Jansen registered four goals. Meghan Lopez racked up 15 saves in front of the cage to earn a win in the morning match.
GAME 1 RECAP
Anna Pal opened up the scoring in the opening minute of play as the Matadors led 1-0 over Cal State Monterey Bay until Shelby Fortune evened the match three minutes later. The first half though belonged to the Matadors. Telek gave the Matadors the lead at the three-minute mark of the first quarter before a 4-0 CSUN second period opened up a 6-1 lead. Two of CSUN's four goals in the second period were scored by Telek including a last-second goal before halftime.
The Otters would rally in the third period, scoring four of the first five goals to pull to within 7-5. Telek gave the Matadors some breathing room with another goal before Olivia Centis answered with a tally late in the third period to make it an 8-6 game.
Cal State Monterey Bay would not have an answer though for Telek in the match. Telek scored her fifth goal of the contest at the sixth-minute mark of the fourth period before Jansen added another goal of her own. The Otters picked up back-to-back goals to again pull to within two but Telek sealed a CSUN win with her sixth goal with a minute to play.

GAME 2 RECAP
The Matadors would get off to a solid start, answering an early LIU goal with three consecutive goals from Valeria Martinez, Pal and Telek. The Sharks trailed 3-1 after one quarter but stormed back with goals from Paola Dominguez and Taylor Thurlow to even the match up. Jansen gave the Matadors the lead once more before LIU scored twice within a 23-second span go in front 5-4. The teams traded goals until Helena Sandhagen squared the match at 6-6 after 16 minutes of play.
LIU stormed in front with three-straight goals to open the third period, two of which scored by Elena Camarena. Jansen's goal with 1:24 left in the third period would be the Matadors' lone tally of the quarter as they trailed 10-7 heading to the final stanza.
A total of eight goals would be scored in the fourth period, which saw the Matadors pull to within one goal on three separate occassions. Telek scored three of the four CSUN goals in the period including a tally with 4:32 left to play that cut the LIU lead to 12-11. However, Jessica Dean scored a crucial goal with 2:56 to play and Camarena added another 36 seconds later to ensure a Sharks victory.

GAME NOTES
Pal registered four assists in each match while Telek had an assist in each game to finish with 13 total points on the day. In the four games this weekend, Telek had 15 goals to push her season tally to 35.
