Matadors Clinch Series with Pacific with Doubleheader Sweep
2/26/2022 4:47:00 PM | Baseball
GAME 1 RECAP
The Matadors jumped on the Tigers in the first two innings, plating 12 runs over that span to take control of the contest.
Moody singled in the Matadors' first run on a drive up the middle in the first inning. Andrew Sojka added to the lead with an RBI single of his own before Drew Porter drew a bases loaded walk and Graysen Tarlow was hit by a pitch to bring in CSUN's fourth run.
CSUN flexed its offensive muscles in the second inning, breaking the game wide open. Moody again started the rally, this time with a triple before Sojka doubled him in with a drive down the left field line. Joey Kramer followed next with a two-run homer over the right-field wall. Later in the inning, Brandon Bohning drove in two more runs with a single while Le became the eighth consecutive batter to reach base when he belted a three-run home run to push the lead to 12-0.
The early runs would be more than enough for starter Blake Sodersten. The right-hander scattered two hits through the first three innings but would have to work out of bases loaded jam in the fourth.
Pacific broke up Sodersten's shutout bid in the fifth after a two-run home run from Thomas Gavella. Sodersten though allowed just one hit the rest of the way, as he finished with six innings pitched and two runs allowed.
CSUN would add to its lead with a single tally in the third inning, two more in the fifth and one more in the sixth.
GAME 2 RECAP
Le kick started CSUN with a leadoff home run in the top of the first inning but the Tigers answered back with the tying run in the top of the second inning when James McClenaghan doubled and later scored on a groundout.Â
CSUN starter Ryan Wentz kept the Tigers' offense at bay throughout his five innings on the mound, limiting the opposition to just the McClenaghan double while he walked two. He retired nine-straight batters during one stretch before giving up a leadoff walk to Jeremy Lea in the fifth.
Pacific starter Hunter Hayes would pick up a double play in the second inning and scatter three hits in a shutout third. However, CSUN finally broke through in the fourth, taking advantage of two walks, a hit batter and a key error. Sebastian Garcia picked up an RBI single with the bases loaded to break a 1-1 tie before a throwing error on a Bohning grounder brought in two more runs. Moody capped the inning with a two-run home run to push the lead to 7-1.
After Wentz left the game in the fifth, the Tigers rallied against the CSUN bullpen over the final two innings. Pacific scored three times in the sixth with the big blow coming on a McClenaghan two-run triple. Ali Camarillo added a key insurance run in the bottom of the sixth but the Tigers again threatened to complete the comeback in the top of the seventh. Blake Schriever was summoned from the bullpen with two runners on and nobody out before retiring three of four batters with only one run coming across.
GAME NOTES
Tarlow picked up his first career hit on an RBI single in the fifth inning of game one while Shunsuke Sakaino and Kevin Fitzer also collected their first career RBI in the win. While homering in game two, Moody finished a home run shy of the cycle in game one. CSUN scored six times in the fourth inning of game two on just two hits. Le is the first Matador since Denzel Clarke last April at Long Beach State to hit a home run to lead off a game.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"Any time you win two games in a doubleheader, it's always big. That's why I'm not really fond of doubleheaders because a lot of times you see teams split. It's hard to win two games in one day, especially against an opponent I have respect for. I always seem to be the pessimist because I don't ever want my guys to be satisfied. There's so much more we could do to be better. I thought we did enough to be successful. I'm proud of them because they overcame some deficiencies we had. We swung the bat well and hit some balls over the fence. The ball was flying out of here today. The starting pitching was good, not great."
"It's a work in progress, as always but I'm happy we've been able to overcome ourselves and win three games so far."
