Matadors Go 2-0 at the Convergence Tournament

CLAREMONT, Calif.---No. 25 CSUN Water Polo (8-5) swept its two games at the Convergence Tournament on Friday. The Matadors defeated Villanova 10-9 at Haldeman Pool before beating McKendree 13-4 at Axelrood Aquatics Center. Dorottya Telek scored a combined five goals on the day while Carly Bockstahler added three goals. Goalkeeper Meghan Lopez registered 19 in two starts and chipped in with a goal.
GAME 1 RECAP
The Matadors registered the first two goals to start the game with Villanova as Telek and Kylee Jansen hit a pair of even-strength goals. Emily McKenzie would cut the lead in half with a tally with 3:43 left in the first quarter before CSUN struck for back-to-back tallies from Telek and Valeria Martinez in the second quarter. Villanova though fought back beginning with a strike from Stella Byles. McKenzie and Emily Morrissey then found the back of the net to even the match at 4-4 with 2:42 left in the second period.
The final 2:17 of the first half would see a flurry of goals starting with tallies from Jessica Matkovich and Shelby Hovanesian. After Villanova tied the match once more in the final minute, Bockstahler beat the halftime buzzer to give CSUN a 7-6 lead.
Matkovich opened up the scoring in the third period before Telek completed the hat trick with another goal. Villanova stormed back again in the fourth period, scoring two-straight goals to pull to within 9-8. However, Martinez added a key insurance goal for CSUN with her second of the day with 1:15 left to play. Byles cut the lead to 10-9 with a minute to play but the Matadors held on the rest of the way.
Lopez had 10 saves in net to go with two assists while Martinez and Anna Pal had two assists apiece as well.

GAME 2 RECAP
After a nailbiter in the morning game, the Matadors jumped on McKendree and never looked back in the afternoon match. Pal opened up the scoring 39 seconds into the match before Telek scored twice and Helena Sandhagen added another to put CSUN on top 4-0. The Bearcats managed a first-quarter goal from Abigail Burton but CSUN responded with three more goals in the final 1:13 to lead 7-1 after eight minutes.
The Matadors had another dominant quarter in the second eight-minute session as CSUN outscored McKendree 5-0. Bockstahler led the way with two goals in the second period to lead CSUN to a 12-1 lead at halftime.
McKendree registered a pair of goals in the third period and found the net once in the fourth but it would not nearly be enough to catch CSUN. Tatiana Smeltzer closed the scoring for the day with a tally in the final minute of the fourth period.
Lopez picked up nine more saves in her second full game in front of the net. Martinez and Pal once again had two assists in the match while Matkovich had three steals.
