CSUN Defeats San José State 5-2

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—The CSUN Women's Tennis team improved to 2-0 Sunday when the Matadors defeated defending Mountain West champion San José State 5-2 at the Matador Tennis Complex.
CSUN got on the board first when Magdalena Hedrzak and Sasha Turchak defeated Alba Pedrero Galindo and Lara Marco Mas 6-4 at No. 2 doubles. Rozalina Youseva and Jovana Babic tied the doubles score when the Spartans' duo defeated Ekaterina Repina and Yuliia Zhytelna 7-6 (7-5) in the No. 3 doubles match. The Matadors took the doubles point when Jolene Coetzee and Ana Isabel Fraile Toboso went to a tiebreaker to defeat Andrieleva Oleksan and Raquel Villan Perira 7-6 (7-5).
Babic began singles action by defeating Zhytelna 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 6 slot. Coetzee put the Matadors into the lead when she defeated Pedrero Galinda 7-5, 7-5 at No. 2 singles. Turchak put CSUN up 3-1 at No. 5. Turchak dropped the first set 3-6 before coming back to take set two by a 6-3 count. In the third and deciding set, Turchak took the match 6-1.
Youseva scored what proved to be the final San José State (2-1) point when she handed Fraile Toboso a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 defeat at No. 4. Repina had to go to three sets in No. 1 play, but she came away with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 victory against Olesksan. Hedrzak wrapped up the day by defeating Irena Muradyan. Hedrzak dropped the first set 5-7 before rallying back to win set two 6-4. In the third set, the play went to a tiebreaker where Hedrzak won 8-6.

"Today was a tremendous college tennis match. There were two tiebreakers in doubles and four three-set matches in singles. We were able to fight against a tough team that won the Mountain West last season."

CSUN is off until Feb. 17 when the Matadors open Big West play at UC Davis. The first serve is set for 1:30 p.m.
