Matadors Post 7-4 Win at LMU
3/15/2022 11:01:00 PM | Baseball
LOS ANGELES, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (10-6) racked up 13 hits in a 7-4 victory at Loyola Marymount on Tuesday at Page Stadium. The trio of Brandon Bohning, Bart West and Joey Kramer posted three hits apiece while Bohning and West belted home runs. The Matadors used six different pitchers in the game with Gavin Lizik earning the victory with 1.2 innings of relief.
The Lions struck first in the opening inning on a leadoff home run from Devan Ornelas but CSUN starter Lucas Bruan bounced back to retire six of the next seven batters. Braun also stranded a base runner at third base to end the home half of the second inning.
LMU added to its lead against the CSUN bullpen in the third inning when Benny Casillas stroked an RBI single. Lizik though was able to limit the damage by inducing an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play.
On the flip side, the Matadors were unable to take advantage of scoring chances in the early innings as two runners were thrown out on the base paths early in the game. CSUN also stranded two base runners in the third before breaking through in the fourth with a two-out rally.
After the first two batters were retired in the top of the fourth, the next five Matadors reached on base hits. Kramer singled to start the rally then West smacked a two-run home run to left-center field to even the game. Sebastian Garcia kept the inning alive with a double to the gap in left field before Bohning broke the tie with an RBI single. Jakob Simons completed the hit barrage with a triple into the right-field corner, bringing Bohning home for the Matadors' fourth run.
Bohning added to his RBI total with another base hit in the top of the sixth to plate Kramer, extending the Matador lead to 5-2.
CSUN pitching would have to work through several scoring threats in the middle innings to preserve the slim lead. In the fourth, Diego Gutierrez stranded two base runners before retiring the final two batters of the fifth with the bases loaded. LMU again loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth but Xavier Martinez entered out of the bullpen to retire Jared Thomas for the third out.
Â
The Lions would cut the Matador lead to one in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run home run from Diego Baqueiro. However, the Matadors returned the favor in the top of the eighth when Bohning stepped to the plate. After Graysen Tarlow worked a one-out walk, Bohning hit a towering home run over the wall in left field for a CSUN 7-4 lead.
Blake Schriever entered the game out of the bullpen in the eighth inning and would silence the LMU bats. In his first inning of work, Schriever struck out the side, all of which were on swinging third strikes. Schriever picked up two more strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth in another 1-2-3 inning to nail down the save.

GAME NOTES
West finished a triple shy of the cycle in the game as he went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI. Bohning, who went 3-for-4 in the game, tied his career-high in RBI with four in the win. Simons also had two hits in the game with one RBI.
Schriever notched his third save of the season and his 18th overall in his collegiate career. He also tied Andy Davidson for fourth place on the Matadors' all-time career games pitched list with his 80th appearance.
The Matadors snapped a six-game skid to LMU and posted their first win in the series since March 20, 2012.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"I give Loyola Marymount credit, they came out and jumped on us early until we put a four-spot in the fourth inning. Bart was a big part of that, he made a good pass on that pitch and drove it out of the yard. As I said to the team, we have some guys that are out right now. If we are as good a team as we think we are, even without our best players, we can overcome that. It happened on our last trip; we had some guys out for various reasons. We overcame that at McNeese State and did that again tonight.
Brandon Bohning has been in and out of the lineup and will be playing shortstop for us for a while. It was really good to see him put a good pass on the ball. And I thought Jake Simons had a big part in this game. He continues to play hard for us. I thought in the middle innings we got a little sloppy [on the mound], but we brought in some relievers, and they shut some innings down to pick up their teammates. Overall, we can walk out of here proud that we got another victory. The good thing is we now get two days to practice and prepare to open up Big West play at Cal Poly who is a very formidable opponent."
