HONOLULU---No. 25 CSUN Water Polo dropped a 15-5 decision to No. 5 Hawai'i in a Big West match on Saturday at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. Dorottya Telek scored three goals to lead the Matadors while Meghan Lopez picked up five saves in front of the cage.
The Matadors were able to keep the Rainbow Wahine off the scoreboard for the first two-plus minutes of the first period but Elyse Lemay-Lavoie found the back of the net at the 5:29 mark. Jordan Wedderburn would double the Hawai'i lead a minute later before Telek cut the lead in half on a power play. However, the Rainbow Wahine took control over the final three minutes of the period, scoring three-straight goals to take a 5-1 lead.
In the second quarter, Hawai'i continued to find success on the offensive end as Lucia Gomez de la Puente and Lot Stertefeld got into the scoring column. Lemay-Lavoie added to her scoring output with another goal before Alba Bonamusa Boix completed a 7-0 Hawai'i run with another tally. Helena Sandhagen would beat the halftime buzzer with a goal but CSUN went into intermission trailing 9-2.
Lara Luka opened up the scoring in the third period with a penalty goal and a power play tally that extended the lead to nine. Kylee Jansen scored the Matadors' lone goal of the third quarter with 5:47 remaining before Hawai'i connected for three-straight goals. Once again, the Matadors beat the buzzer to end a period as Telek notched her second goal of the night to end the third quarter.
