CSUN Opens Busy Weekend with Home Match Against Ottawa

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 24 CSUN Water Polo opens a five-match weekend on Friday afternoon when the Matadors host Ottawa University Arizona at 3 p.m. CSUN continues non-conference action on Saturday with road matches against the Claremont Mudd-Scripps at 2 p.m. and Pomona-Pitzer at 5 p.m. The Matadors finish up the weekend with two more matches on Sunday at Whitter where the Matadors will take on the host Poets at 9 a.m. and No. 21 Brown at noon.
The Matadors (8-10, 0-4 Big West) continued Big West play last week with a trip to fifth-ranked Hawai'i. The Rainbow Wahine received goals from seven different players in a 15-5 triumph over the Matadors. CSUN would get a hat trick from Dorottya Telek while Helena Sandhagen and Kylee Jansen also hit the back of the net.
After this weekend, the Matadors will wrap up Big West action with two matches to close the 2022 regular season. CSUN visits UC Davis on Saturday, April 2 before hosting Long Beach State in the regular season finale on Saturday, April 16. The Big West Water Polo Championships this season will be held in Honolulu from April 21-23.
Telek leads the Big West in goals per game at a 2.9 clip while she ranks second in goals scored (53) and points (75), and sixth in assists (20). On CSUN's all-time single-season scoring list, Telek is rapidly approaching the top-10 as she needs 10 more goals to crack the list. Telek also tops the Matadors in field goal percentage (53.5) and steals (24).
Anna Pal leads the Matadors in assists (26) and points (54) to go with 28 goals and 12 steals. Jansen is third on the team in scoring with 22 goals while Sandhagen has 17 goals and Valeria Martinez has notched 14 goals. In front of the cage, Meghan Lopez has a team-high 120 saves with a 10.29 goals-against-average.
A Look at CSUN's Opponents this Weekend
Ottawa University Arizona (OUAZ) is in its second season of women's water polo in 2022 after not playing any matches last season. The team holds an 8-14 record on the campaign and plays all of its matches away from home. Tori Higginson has a team-high 24 goals this season followed by Kendall Patrick with 18 goals and 10 assists. CSUN played OUAZ for the first time in team history in 2020, prevailing by a 14-3 margin.
The Claremont Mudd-Scripps come in with a 9-5 record and 5-1 mark in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC). CMS is ranked third in this week's Division III rankings. Mia Adsen leads the squad with 23 goals while Christina Kulick has 20 goals. The Matadors are 9-0 against CMS all-time in water polo with their last win coming in 2015 (15-7).
Pomona-Pitzer has a 12-14 record with a 6-0 mark in the SCIAC. In this week's Division III poll, Pomona-Pitzer was ranked No. 1. The Sagehens' 14 losses this season have come at the hands of Division I teams while the program has D-1 wins over La Salle, Santa Clara and California Baptist. CSUN holds a 10-1 lead in the all-time series with Pomona-Pitzer and last won in the 2017 season by a 9-3 final.
Whittier owns a 10-6 overall record and 5-2 mark in SCIAC play. The Poets come in with a perfect 3-0 record at home this season. The team was ranked No. 4 in this week's Division III poll. The Matadors defeated Whittier 18-8 in the 2020 season to improve to 5-1 all-time against the Poets.
The 21st-ranked Brown Bears hold a 14-9 record and 5-2 mark in the CWPA. Zoe King has scored the most goals on the team with 32 to go with 21 assists while Claire Pisani has netted 30 goals. CSUN has both all-time meetings with Brown as the Matadors last won over the Bears in 2016 (10-6).Â
