Matadors Notch 12-4 Win Over Ottawa
3/25/2022 4:52:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 24 CSUN Water Polo (9-10) defeated Ottawa University Arizona (OUAZ) 12-4 on Friday at Matador Pool. Dorottya Telek tallied four goals while Helena Sandhagen and Valeria Martinez netted two goals apiece. Meghan Lopez had 11 saves in front of the cage.
It would be a defensive struggle for the two teams in the first half. Sandhagen broke up a scoreless tie at the 5:08 mark of the first quarter while the Matadors held OUAZ without a goal for the first eight minutes. In the second quarter, Jenna Rasmussen evened the score with a goal on a power play but the Matadors responded with a goal on the ensuing posession from Telek. A minute later, Telek hit the back of the net again to push the lead to two goals. However, OUAZ cut the lead to 3-2 at halftime with a late tally from Cierra Crouch.
After scoring just three times in the first 16 minutes, the Matadors' offense exploded for seven goals in the third period to break open the game. Telek scored the first two goals before Sandhagen and Valeria Martinez extended the lead to 7-2. In the final two minutes of the third quarter, Madison Little picked up a goal while Martinez and Tatiana Smeltzer also struck the netting as the lead grew to 10-3.
CSUN completed an 8-1 run on a goal from Jessica Matkovich at the six-minute mark of the fourth period. Alexis Smith got into the scoring act with a goal with 3:09 left to play while the Matadors held the Spirit to a single tally over the final eight minutes.
CSUN Goals: Telek 4, Martinez 2, Sandhagen 2, Little, Matkovich, Smeltzer, Smith
CSUN Saves: Lopez 11
GAME NOTES
Tatum Scarry and Lacey Hall had three assists apiece in the match. Lopez added two steals and an assist to go with her 11 saves.
Telek has now scored a team-high 57 goals on the season.
Friday was the second-ever meeting between CSUN and OUAZ. The teams also played once in the 2020 season with the Matadors coming out on top 14-3.
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"Nothing better than playing at home. It was a slow start for us but we overcame some first-half mistakes and we were able to control the game. Good start to a long weekend of competing ahead."
