CSUN Finishes 1-2 on Day One of Big West Challenge

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The CSUN Beach Volleyball team faced a pair of top-15 teams on day one of the Big West Challenge as the Matadors finished 1-2 in three matches at Rosie's Dog Beach.
CAL POLY 5, CSUN 0
The Matadors opened the tournament against the 12th-ranked Mustangs and CSUN came up empty in all five pairs. With all five matches starting simultaneously, Cal Poly picked up the first point in the No. 1 pairs as Ella Connor and Tia Miric defeated Lauren Eknoian and Emily Sparks, 21-15, 21-14. The No. 2 pairs also went to the Mustangs in straight sets as Piper Ferch and Jayelin Lombard topped True McCullough and Seyvion Waggoner, 21-18, 21-15. Cal Poly clinched the win when the No. 3 pairs went final as Rachel Rahtz and Peyton Dueck swept Darbi Honeycutt and Mikaela Maughan, 21-12, 21-19. The Mustangs would complete the 5-0 team win with victories in both the No. 4 and No. 5 pairs as Piper Naess and Josie Ulrich topped Kailey Klein and Victoria Rogers, 21-8, 21-19 and Erika Foreman and Eleonore Johansen held off Abbey Sweeting and Madison Klungel, 21-13, 21-16.

Things got no easier for the Matadors in the second match as fifth-ranked Hawai'i also won by the same 5-0 tally. Megan Widener and Lea Kruse made quick work of Sweeting and Klungel in the No. 5 pairs, winning 21-4, 21-14 to open the scoring. Anna Maidment and Sofia Russo made it 2-0 'Bows with a 21-13, 21-14 win over McCullough and Waggoner at No. 2. Hawai'i's No. 3 pair of Riley Wagoner and Kylin Loker would clinch the win after sweeping Honeycutt and Maughan by the score of 21-12, 21-17. Brooke Van Sickle and Kaylee Glagau then topped Eknoian and Sparks, 21-17, 21-15 in the No. 1 pairs before Klein and Rogers claimed the opening set over the 'Bows No. 4 pair of Ilihia Huddleston and Sarah Penner before falling in three tight sets (17-21, 24-22, 15-13).

Looking to get back in the win column to wrap up the day, the Matadors dropped a single set to Sacramento State in a 5-0 win over the Hornets. Eknoian and Sparks picked up CSUN's first win of the day, sweeping Macey Hayden and Kalani Hayes in the No. 1 pairs, 21-12, 21-8. Sweeting and Klungel made it 2-0 Matadors by winning by forfeit at No. 5 before Klein and Rogers clinched the win for CSUN with a 21-14, 21-18 win over Caty Cordano and Karlee Soderberg in the No. 4 pairs. The win for Klein is her 45th career win, pulling her within three of tying Lauren McMurray for the program record. Honeycutt and Maughan picked up their 35th career win as a pair when the CSUN duo swept Ashtin Olin and Tiya Kamba-Griffin by the score of 21-12, 21-16 at No. 3's before the Matadors capped the sweep with a three-set win (21-19, 19-21, 19-17) by McCullough and Waggoner over the Hornets' Caitlin Volkmann and Bridgette Smith.Â

COACH JOHN PRICE SAID
"We've played a lot of matches and haven't had much practice time over the last couple weeks so we came into this weekend looking to create a baseline heading into the final four weeks of the season. After tomorrow, we'll have a lot more practice time and I'd like to see us make some big strides before we face these same teams at the Big West Championship."

CSUN (10-11) will play three more matches on Saturday as the Matadors take on UC Davis at 10:45 a.m., CSU Bakersfield at 2:30 p.m. and Long Beach State at 3:45 p.m. Final results following Saturday's matches will determine seeding for the Big West Championship at the end of April.
