Matadors Top CSU Bakersfield on Day Two of Big West Challenge

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The CSUN Beach Volleyball team closed out the 2022 Big West Challenge Saturday with a win over CSU Bakersfield and losses to UC Davis and No. 15 Long Beach State as the Matadors wound up 2-4 in six matches at Rosie's Dog Beach.
UC DAVIS 4, CSUNÂ 1
After finishing 1-2 in three matches on Friday, the Matadors opened Saturday's play against UC Davis. The Aggies claimed the first four pairs before True McCullough and Seyvion Waggoner took a hard-fought three-set win in the No. 2 pair. UCD's Tabitha Mitchell and Kylie Miller opened the scoring with a 21-9, 21-9 win over Kailey Klein and Victoria Rogers in the No. 4 pairs. Mia Olsen and Madelin Smith made it 2-0 when UCD's No. 5 pair topped Jadin Williams and Layla Cederlind, 21-11, 21-11. The clinching point came in the No. 3 pairs when Morgan Coolbaugh and Sam Lazenby swept Darbi Honeycutt and Mikaela Maughan, 21-17, 21-18. Lauren Eknoian and Emily Sparks would fall to Chelsea Maeglin and Colleen McGuire by the score of 21-19, 21-15 before McCullough and Waggoner got the Matadors on the board with a three-set (15-21, 21-16, 16-14) victory over Ashlee Goyooochea and Megan Luly.

CSUNÂ 4, CSU BAKERSFIELD 1
In their second match, the Matadors looked to snap a three-match skid against the Roadrunners. CSUB picked up the first point in the No. 1 pairs as Cameron Solberg and Milica Vukobrat topped Eknoian and Sparks, 21-16, 21-14. Sweeting and Klungel then started a string of four straight CSUN wins, sweeping the No. 5 pairs by the score of 21-9, 21-16. McCullough and Waggoner then picked up their second win of the day, making it 2-1 Matadors with a three-set comeback win (16-21, 21-18, 15-13) over Sophia Hladyniuk and Hana Makonova. Honeycutt and Maughan then clinched the win for the Matadors with a 28-26, 21-16 win over Alaina Gendale and Seleisa Elisaia in the No. 3 pair. Klein and Rogers earned CSUN's fourth win of the match with a 19-21, 21-11, 15-9 victory over Anna Unke and Brooke Boiseau in the No. 4 pairs. The win was Klein's 46th career win, inching closer to Lauren McMurray's program record 48.

Seeking their first-ever win over the Beach, the Matadors dropped all five pairs to wrap up the day. Sweeting and Klungel were swept by Haley Carrington and Leah Black in the No. 5 pair, 21-12, 21-11 before Sophie Major and Claire Newlander made it 2-0 with a 21-17, 21-15 win over Klein and Rogers at No. 4. Kenzie Holtz and Katie Kennedy clinched the win by defeating McCullough and Waggoner, 21-18, 21-17. The final two pairs also went to the Beach in straight sets as Skyler Germann and Alice Pratesi swept Eknoian and Sparks, 21-16, 21-15 before Nicci Reinking and Emily Mattoon swept Honeycutt and Maughan by the score of 21-14, 21-13.

COACH JOHN PRICE SAID
"Hopefully our win over CSU Bakersfield today is a sign that we're getting better as a team. We knew we would face some really good teams here this weekend and our goal over the next few weeks is to hopefully close the gap on some of the top teams in the conference."
UP NEXT
CSUN (11-13) will play its final home matches next weekend as the Matadors host Life Pacific and Marymount on Friday before hosting Life Pacific and Saint Katherine on Saturday. Both tri-duals get underway at 11 a.m.
