NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Water Polo's sophomore Dorottya Telek received her first career Big West Player of the Week nod on Wednesday, the league office announced. Telek helped the Matadors go 4-1 last week with four multiple-goal performances.
A 5-6 center, Telek scored 14 goals and finished with 21 points combined in the Matadors' five matches last weekend. She added seven assists, 10 steals and 12 defensive exclusions to her stat line while shooting 48.3 percent from the field. Telek scored at least one goal in all five matches including posting three or more goals in three contests.
Telek netted four goals on just five attempts in the Matadors' 12-4 win over Ottawa last Friday at Matador Pool. A day later, she would hit the net four more times to lift the Matadors to a 10-8 win over the Claremont Mudd-Scripps before scoring three goals to go with three assists in CSUN's afternoon 11-10 victory over Pomona-Pitzer. Telek scored a fourth-quarter goal in a narrow 8-7 win over Whittier last Sunday and would go on to close the day with four assists and two goals in a double overtime loss to Brown.
Telek's week vaulted her atop the Big West leaderboards in scoring as she now leads the league in goals (67), points (94) and goals per game (2.9). She is also in first place in steals (34) while ranking in third place in assists (27).
Originally from Budapest, Telek has already cracked the Matadors' all-time single season top-10 scoring list in just her first season at CSUN. Her 67 goals are the ninth-most scored by a player in team history. With three more goals, she would become just the fifth Matador to ever score 70 goals in a single season, joining Whitney Delgado (twice), Madeleine Sanchez (twice), Chari Christopher and Allison Brookes. Delgado has the most goals ever scored in a season at CSUN with 80 in 2010.
The league honor is the first for a Matador since Katia Andon-Mateos won the award on March 8, 2019.
The Matadors return to Big West action on Saturday with a road test against UC Davis at noon.
