CSUN Drops 6-2 Decision at #2 Stanford
3/5/2022 6:33:00 PM | Baseball
STANFORD, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (6-3) scored single tallies in the eighth and ninth innings, but it would not be enough to overcome No. 2 Stanford in a 6-2 loss on Saturday at Sunken Diamond. Kai Moody finished 1-for-3 with an RBI while Joey Kramer went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Blake Sodersten worked into the sixth inning on the mound and struck out four.
Stanford struck first in the home half of the first inning after Sodersten retired the first two batters. Brock Jones singled to keep the inning alive before Kody Huff was hit by a pitch, which set the stage for Drew Bower to stroke an RBI double to put the Cardinal ahead 1-0. The Matadors though prevented further damage when Bart West and Ali Camarillo teamed up to throw out Huff at home plate on the play.
CSUN perhaps had its best scoring opportunity in the top of the second inning. Andrew Sojka led off the inning with a hit and would advance a base on a wild pitch, but he was thrown out trying to move up to third. CSUN would later load the bases with two outs after hits from West and Graysen Tarlow, but Brandon Bohning was retired on a flyout to left.
Stanford starter Quinn Mathews rebounded after a shaky second inning to retire 16 of the next 17 batters with only Gabe Gonzalez reaching base on a walk during that stretch.
Meanwhile, Sodersten sat down seven of eight Stanford batters after the first inning before Bowser struck again with a solo home run in the fourth. Sodersten would pitch out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth and strand two more base runners in the fifth, but the Cardinal broke through with a huge four-run sixth.
After Carter Graham singled in a run with the bases loaded in the sixth, a costly throwing error in center field allowed two more runs to come across. Graham later scored on a wild pitch to put Stanford ahead 6-0.
The Matadors finally broke through in the scoring column in the top of the eighth inning on a two-out RBI single from Moody. CSUN added a second run in the top of the ninth when Kramer, who hit a leadoff double, touched home plate on a passed ball. A comeback though was on in the cards for the Matadors as the Stanford bullpen closed the game with back-to-back strikeouts.
GAME NOTES
Kramer has now reached base safely in all nine games this season while Moody has reached base in eight consecutive games. Kramer also has a six-game hit streak.
Sodersten finished with 5.1 innings pitched and six runs allowed but four earned. Elias Jauregui worked 0.2 shutout innings while Chad Wilson tossed 1.2 clean innings and Kyle Hoskins retired the only batter he faced.
For Stanford, Mathews tossed seven shutout innings, scattering three hits to go with six strikeouts.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"Today, we matched up against a hot left-handed pitcher in Mathews. He was really good and kept us off-balanced all day. I believe the final score isn't indicative of how much they outplayed us today. From our side of the ball, I felt we gave Stanford too many free bases with walks, hit-by-pitch and errors on the field. That will always haunt you but even more when you're playing a very good opponent. But that's one day and we get an opportunity to come out tomorrow and still win the series, and I'm excited about the opportunity in front of us."
