Matadors Host Hawai'i on Saturday for Senior Night

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball (7-21, 3-12 Big West) concludes the regular season on Saturday for a Senior Night matchup with Hawai'i at 7 p.m. inside The Matadome. Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister have the call on ESPN+ and GoMatadors.com/Radio. Fans are encouraged to come early as the Matadors will honor their three-member senior class in a pre-game ceremony.
Hawai'i improved its all-time record against CSUN to 19-8 after winning the teams' first meeting on Jan. 27 at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. Atin Wright led the Matadors with 18 points while Christian Gray scored a season-high 16 points in defeat against Hawai'i. The teams have split the past eight meetings in the series while CSUN has won two of the last three games played at The Matadome.
With one game left to play, the Matadors are locked into the No. 8 versus No. 9 matchup in the first round of the 2022 Big West Basketball Championships next week in Henderson, Nev. at the Dollar Loan Center. Two first-round games will take place on Tuesday with the winners advancing to quarterfinal action on Thursday. The semifinals are scheduled for Friday and the championship will take place Saturday.
CSUN will honor its senior trio of Darius Brown II, Christian Gray and Miles Brookins ahead of the team's final home game of the season. One of the top point guards over the past four seasons in the Big West Conference, Brown has played in 95 career games and ranks third in team history in assists (431), ninth in games started (93) and ninth in steals (134). Brown, who suffered a season-ending injury on Dec. 4, has scored 879 career points with the Matadors. Gray, a graduate transfer from Fresno State, has appeared in 27 games with CSUN this season while totaling 141 points and 125 rebounds as the team's primary starting power forward. Rounding out the class, Brookins joined CSUN in 2019 after starting his career at La Salle. He would play in 12 games over the past three seasons due to injury but he concludes his career with 303 points in 69 Division I games.

The Matadors would fall to UC Santa Barbara this past Tuesday, 70-61, at the Thunderdome. CSUN stayed within striking distance of UCSB throughout most of the contest. The Gauchos led by six at halftime and would extend to a 13-point lead near the seven-minute mark of the second half. The Matadors though stormed back with a 9-2 run to pull to within six points. CSUN would trail by a 63-57 margin in the final minute of play before the Gauchos picked up a key three-point play from Ajay Mitchell and five late free throws to hold off the Matadors.Â
Elijah Hardy paced the Matadors with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting against UCSB to go with four assists. Onyi Eyisi added 12 points and four rebounds while Wright chipped in with 11 points and a career-high five steals.
On the Big West leaderboard, Wright ranks eighth in the league in points per game (14.3) while he is third in minutes per game (33.8), sixth in free throw percentage (82.7) and 10th in steals per game (1.2). Hardy is third in the conference in steals per game (1.6), 10th in assists per game (2.9) and 14th in points per game (12.1). Fidelis Okereke checks in at fourth in blocks per game (1.0) and 20th in rebounds per game (5.1). As a team, CSUN still leads the Big West in steals per game (7.5).
A Closer Look at Hawai'i
The Rainbow Warriors (15-10, 9-5 Big West) dropped a 67-60 decision at UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, which snapped a two-game winning streak. Overall, Hawai'i has won four of its last six games. On the road, Hawai'i has gone 5-6 while it holds a 10-4 record at home on the season. The Bows are tied for third in the Big West standings but could finish as high as second place or as low as sixth in the league.
The team's top scorer this season, Noel Coleman (14.8 points per game), has been out of the lineup since Feb. 19. With Coleman out, Jerome Desrosiers is the team's top scorer at 11.2 points per game while Junior Madut is averaging 10.4 points per game. Desrosiers is fifth in the Big West in rebounds per game (6.6) and teammate Bernardo da Silva is ninth on the rebounding list at 6.4 per game. JoVon McClanahan is fourth in the conference in assists per game (3.7) to go with his 6.7 points. As a team, Hawai'i is second in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage (36.4) and third in scoring defense (64.4 PPG).
