STANFORD, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (6-4) battled to the final out, but would leave the bases loaded in the ninth in a 3-2 loss to No. 2 Stanford on Sunday at Sunken Diamond. Ryan Wentz worked six quality innings, allowing two runs to go with six strikeouts. Joey Kramer drove in a run and reached base three times.
Wentz would give the Matadors strong pitching on the mound throughout his six innings of work on Sunday. After walking a pair in the first inning, Wentz induced a 4-6-3 double play to end the frame. The right-hander would bounce back following the rocky start to retire 10 of 11 Stanford batters.
The Matadors had a runner thrown out on the base paths in the first and hit into a double play in the second inning before breaking through in the fourth. Ali Camarillo singled to start the frame before Andrew Sojka walked and Kramer singled with one out to drive in Camarillo. CSUN would load the bases when Gabe Gonzalez was hit by a pitch, but the next two batters were retired in order.
Wentz took a 1-0 lead to the fifth inning when the Cardinal bats broke up the shutout bid. After the first two batters singled, Adam Crampton stroked an RBI single to tie the game up. Wentz would retire the next batter for the second out and appeared as though he would escape further trouble before a costly error on a Carter Graham grounder to short allowed the go-ahead run to score.
Joey Dixon gave Stanford a lift out of the bullpen, helping maintain a Cardinal 2-1 lead. Dixon recorded the final two outs to end the threat in the fourth and proceeded to retire the next nine Matador batters in succession.
After Wentz exited the game after six innings, Stanford broke through again with a solo home run from Braden Montgomery to lead off the seventh inning. Stanford picked up two more hits in the seventh, but Xavier Martinez worked out of trouble by retiring Brock Jones.
Trailing by two, the Matadors nearly rallied back against the Stanford bullpen. Sojka and Kramer worked one-out walks before Gonzalez singled to load the bases. Drew Porter would be retired for the second out, but a passed ball allowed Sojka to score, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Graysen Tarlow drew a walk as well to load the bases once more, however, Nathan Barraza was retired on a grounder to end the game.
GAME NOTES
Wentz yielded just four hits in his six innings of work while only one of his two runs allowed were earned. Lucas Braun retired all four batters he faced out of the bullpen.
Kramer extended his on-base streak to 10 games while Moody has reached base safely in nine in a row.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"Today was a battle that we just came up on the short end. We didn't come away with our goal of winning the series, but we battled all weekend long against what I believe is one of the top five teams in America. Offensively, we just squandered some opportunities when we had them. Ryan Wentz though pitched a very good game and continues to keep improving.
These losses against top programs are tough, but we continue to learn as a team what we need to do to come out on top of these close games. I don't say this very often publically, but this team has character and grit and they continue to make me proud. I believe this team will continue to get better and make CSUN proud when it's all said and done."
UP NEXT
CSUN continues it road trip with a pair of games at Grand Canyon starting Tuesday at 5 p.m. (PST). The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
