#25 CSUN Falls at #13 UC San Diego, 11-5
3/5/2022 3:27:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
LA JOLLA, Calif.---No. 25 CSUN Water Polo (8-6, 0-2 Big West) dropped an 11-5 decision at No. 13 UC San Diego (12-7, 1-0 Big West) on Saturday at Canyonview Aquatic Center. Five different Matadors hit the net in the match while Meghan Lopez racked up eight saves in front of the cage.
UCSD struck first in the opening minute on a goal from Courtney Okumura but CSUN answered with an Anna Pal tally on a power play to even the match up. However, the Matadors went scoreless for the remainder of the first period as Holly Maine scored back-to-back goals to push the Tritons in front 3-1.
Kylee Jansen broke up the scoreless string for CSUN with a goal at the six-minute mark of the second quarter before Ciara Franke extended the lead back to two on a goal of her own. UCSD once again held the Matadors to a single goal for a quarter while Grayson Mix added to the lead making it a 5-2 game at halftime.
CSUN was held scoreless until the 2:20 mark of the third period when Helena Sandhagen hit the net on a power play, cutting the UCSD lead to 6-3. Trailing by three in the fourth quarter, the Matadors received goals from Valeria Martinez and Shelby Hovanesian but it would not be enough to catch the Tritons. Annika Arroyo scored twice and Chloe Pena added a late goal to help secure a UCSD win.
CSUN Goals: Hovanesian, Jansen, Martinez, Pal, Sandhagen
CSUN Saves: Lopez 8
GAME NOTES
Dorottya Telek had two assists and one steal while Martinez, Pal and Lopez had an assist apiece. After CSUN's matches on Sunday, the Matadors will play two-straight against Big West Conference opponents in UC Santa Barbara on March 11 and Hawai'i on March 19.Â
ACCORDING TO COACH MATT WARSHAW
"For three and a half quarters we played great team defense, but we need to learn how to put an entire game together from start to finish. Our ability to follow a game plan and execute on offense is improving every week."
UP NEXT
CSUN wraps up the weekend with two more matches on Sunday at the Aztec Invitational hosted by San Diego State. The Matadors play No. 21 San Diego State at 9 a.m. before wrapping up the day against No. 19 Princeton at 1 p.m.
