Ninth-Inning Homer Lifts GCU Past CSUN, 3-2
3/8/2022 10:16:00 PM | Baseball
PHOENIX, Ariz.---CSUN Baseball (6-5) broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the ninth but Grand Canyon (8-4) collected a walk-off home run in the home half to pick up a 3-2 win on Tuesday at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark. Four Matador pitchers saw action in the game with Diego Gutierrez seeing three innings out of the bullpen with one run allowed. Graysen Tarlow reached base three times and went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Blaine Traxel earned the start on Tuesday and pitched two innings, scattering two hits before handing the ball to the bullpen in the third. Gutierrez took over for Traxel and would retire the first batter he faced before giving up back-to-back singles with the second one being an Elijah Buries RBI single. Behind the plate, Tarlow helped limit the damage in the third inning by throwing out Buries attempting to steal second base while Gutierrez picked up the third out on a grounder off the bat of Tayler Aguilar.
CSUN would have runners at the corrners with one out in the first inning but an inning-ending double play stopped the scoring threat. In the second, the Matadors loaded the bases with one out after a Gabe Gonzalez double and walks to Jakob Simons and Ali Camarillo. GCU starter Hunter Omlid though retired Kai Moody on a lineout to escape the jam.
After stranding a runner at second in the fourth, the Matadors finally broke through in the fifth to tie the game at 1-1. Moody roped a one-out single to begin the rally then Tarlow stroked a single to right-center field. On the play, an error by center fielder Homer Bush Jr. allowed Moody to come around and score the tying run.
Meanwhile, Gutierrez worked a scoreless fourth and fifth before Gavin Lizik took over on the mound in the bottom of the sixth. Lizik would give up a one-out single in the sixth but proceeeded to retire the next five batters, keeping the game tied at 1-1 heading to the eighth.
After Lucas Braun tossed a shutout bottom of the eighth, CSUN took advantage of a GCU error in the ninth to take the lead. Gonzalez led off the inning and would reach second base on an error in center field. Pinch runner Drew Porter then reached third base on a wild pitch before Bart West drew a walk. Moments later, Simons stepped to the plate and hit a sacrifce fly to right field to put CSUN on top 2-1. The Matadors looked for more when Camarillo tried a squeeze play with one out but West was thrown out at the plate.
Down to their final at-bat, the Lopes needed just three pitches to come from behind on the Matadors. Juan Colato singled to start the bottom of the ninth before Adrian Torres belted a walk-off two-run homer to give GCU the 3-2 win.
GAME NOTES
Moody has reached base safely in 10-straight games while Gonzalez has been on base in nine in a row. Mason Le reached base twice in the game and singled.
The Matador quartet of Traxel, Gutierrez, Lizik and Braun, struck out a combined five batters and served one total walk.
For GCU, Omlid worked six innings, allowing one uneanred run on five hits for a no-decision. Vince Reilly earned the win after working one shutout inning.

ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"Tonight was a tough one to lose, as they all are, but GCU in my opinion did more throughout the game and probably deserved it a little more. We had opportunities early on and didn't take advantage of them. When you lose close games like the last two have been, it comes down to many little things that add up when you don't do them right. On a positive note, we pitched many guys and they all gave us a chance to win. Gavin Lizik's two-inning stint was as good as he has been all year. This is why we play a tough schedule before conference so we can find out what we need to get better at as a team. We will bounce back tomorrow."
