Matadors Top GCU 9-4 to Earn Series Split
3/9/2022 4:41:00 PM | Baseball
Sebastian Granados earned the start for the Matadors and would work his way into the fourth inning. The only blemish against Granados came in the first inning when Jacob Wilson stroked a one-out RBI double to give GCU a 1-0 lead. Granados though induced a double play to end the first and pitched around a pair of walks in the second inning. He also retired six of the last eight batters he faced to help the Matadors stay within striking distance.
CSUN stranded three runners through the first two innings before breaking through with the tying run in the third. In the inning, aggressive base running from Jakob Simons forced a throwing error on the base paths. Simons attempted to go from first to third base on a Moody groundout, however, a throwing error got away from the third baseman Juan Colato, allowing Simons to race home.
The Matadors left the bases loaded in the fifth inning but responded an inning later with a huge six-run frame. After Gabe Gonzalez and Bart West reached on singles, Graysen Tarlow attempted to sacrifice both runners up a base but the throw was too late to first base. With the bases loaded, back-to-back Matador batters would be hit by a pitch to force in two runs. Simons hit a sacrifice fly before Moody stroked a two-run triple to right field. Andrew Sojka capped off the inning with an RBI single to put CSUN ahead 7-1.
CSUN added two more insurance runs in the eighth inning on a two-run double from Kramer that hit off the wall in center field, giving the Matadors a 9-1 edge.
The Matador bullpen took over in the fourth starting with Jauregui who picked off a runner to end that inning. Jauregui pitched a scoreless fifth and would be lifted in the sixth with one out in favor of Xavier Martinez.
The Lopes threatened in the sixth inning with two runners on base but behind Martinez and an outstanding defensive play from Moody, the rally would be squashed. With a runner at third and two outs in the sixth, Moody fielded a ground ball up the middle that appeared Sy Snedeker would beat out at first base. However, Moody made a strong throw that beat Snedeker by a step to help keep the game tied.
Martinez worked a shutout seventh and eighth until Blake Schriever took over in the bottom of the ninth. GCU would rally for three runs in the ninth inning before Schriever retired Adrian Torres on a flyout to end the game.
GAME NOTES
Gonzalez and West also had two-hit games as each scored a run. Eight of the nine Matador starters reached base at least once. Matador batters were hit a total of eight times in the game with Gonzalez, Simons and Ali Camarillo hit twice. Moody extended his on-base streak to 11 games while Gonzalez stretched his to 10.
Granados finished with 3.2 innings pitched and one run allowed on two hits to go with two strikeouts. Martinez pitched 2.2 shutout innings with one hit allowed.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"Our team had a great response to a tough loss last night. That's what high character teams do and I'm proud of them for that. We definitely took advantage of opportunities given to us today. Two things that stood out to me was a play that Kai Moody made up the middle that saved us a run. Then the energy that Jake Simons continues to play with is a breath of fresh air for this team. From the mound, freshman pitcher Sebastian Granados was pretty good in his first collegiate start and the guys that followed did their jobs well too. Now, we have to continue to build off this win as we head to McNeese State this weekend."
UP NEXT
CSUN heads to Lake Charles, La. to take on McNeese State in a three-game weekend series. The series starts Friday with first pitch set for 4 p.m. (PST).
