Matadors Drop 6-1 Decision at Arizona State

PHOENIX, Ariz.---CSUN Baseball (18-16) fell to Arizona State (19-19) 6-1 on Tuesday night at the Phoenix Municipal Stadium. Kai Moody, Bart West and Andrew Sojka had two hits apiece while Joey Kramer drove in the Matadors' lone run.
Â
The Sun Devils struck first in the bottom of the first as two hits, capped by an RBI single from Ethan Long put the home team on top 1-0. Blake Sodersten was able to retire the final two batters of the first before pitching a scoreless second inning, leaving a pair of runners in scoring position.
Â
CSUN answered back quickly in the top of the second after three-straight singles to begin the inning. Kevin Fitzer and West connected for singles to put runners at first and second before Kramer stroked a single to left for a game-tying RBI hit. CSUN though settled for just the one run as Kramer and West were stranded at second and third.
Â
Chad Wilson took over for Sodersten in the third inning and would toss a scoreless third but the Sun Devils retook the lead in the fourth on a Kai Murphy solo home run. Arizona State added to their lead in the fifth, capitalizing on a wild pitch from Elias Jauregui that scored Joe Lampe.
The ASU lead swelled to 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth on another solo home run, this time by Jacob Tobias.
After being held to one hit over the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, the Matadors created scoring opportunities in each of the last three innings. However, the Sun Devils were able to turn away each scoring threat.
In the seventh, the Matadors had runners at first and second with two outs but Gabe Gonzalez was retired on strikes. An inning later, CSUN loaded the bases with nobody out when Andrew Sojka singled and both Brandon Bohning and Shunsuke Sakaino were hit by pitches. Christian Bodlovich came on out of the ASU bullpen and put a stop to the Matador rally by striking out the next three batters to end the inning.
Following a two-run home run from Arizona State's Ryan Campos in the eighth, CSUN had two runners on again in the ninth inning with two outs but was turned away again when Bohning went down on strikes.
Â
GAME NOTES
Sojka posted his team-high 15th multiple-hit game of the season while he stretched his on-base streak to 17 games. Six Matador pitchers saw action in the game with Sodersten and Wilson tossing two innings apiece. Jauregui, Isaac Ontiveros, Blake Schriever and Xavier Martinez also made appearances on the mound.
Â
CSUN stranded 10 base runners in the game including seven over the last three innings.
Â
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"Tonight was not a good night for our team. First, getting an opportunity to play and compete in the game of baseball, then to play in a very nice stadium against a traditional power, the attitude for our guys was not in place. Why I can confidently say this is not only the results weren't good on the field but the mental mistakes showed up. We missed too many signs from the mound and ran ourselves out of an inning because we didn't know how many outs there were.
"I believe there is still so much out in front of us and this program. We, as a coaching staff, will continue to work to build a culture of expecting to win with excellence. Now it's our job to find the right nine guys who have the synergy to keep working to do this moving forward."
