Cal State Fullerton leads CSUN 79-54 in the all-time series that dates back to the 1966 season. From 2003-19, the Titans won 17 consecutive series between the two teams before the Matadors earned a four-game split last season at Matador Field. In the 2021 matchup, the Matadors won the two of the first three games of the series before the Titans prevailed by a run in extra innings in the finale to force a split. While the Titans have dominated the matchup over a 17-year span, the teams have played relatively even over the last 11 meetings with Cal State Fullerton holding a narrow 6-5 edge.
The Matadors are coming off a Tuesday midweek loss to Arizona State, 6-1. CSUN evened the game early on an RBI single from Joey Kramer in the second inning but the Sun Devils jumped ahead over the middle innings, pounding out two home runs. The Matadors trailed 4-1 in the eighth before loading the bases with nobody out, however, Arizona State escaped the inning unscathed and would hold on for the win. Three Matadors had multiple-hit games against ASU, which include Andrew Sojka, Kai Moody and Kramer.
On the Big West leaderboard, Sojka tops the conference in runs scored (32) while Gabe Gonzalez is the league leader in home runs (9). Sojka also ranks second in hits (47) and batting average (.362). Bart West is in the top-10 in batting average as he checks in at 10th place with a .342 average. As a team, the Matadors are tied for second in the league with UC San Diego in home runs with 33 while they rank third in stolen bases (29). In the nation, CSUN is 14th in Division I baseball in double plays turned (33).
CSUN enters this weekend with a 28-inning shutout streak in Big West play. Last weekend, the Matadors shutout UC Riverside for an entire three-game series, outscoring the Highlanders 12-0. The feat was the Matadors' first over a three-game series in team history and the most shutouts in succession in the team's Division I history. Blaine Traxel tossed a six-hit shutout in game one, which earned him Big West Pitcher of the Week honors. Diego Gutierrez and Lucas Braun followed with strong outings on the mound over the final two days, pitching 6.1 and 7.0 innings, respectively.
Head coach Dave Serrano will make his final coaching appearance at Goodwin Field this weekend. A former Titan pitcher in 1986 under head coach Augie Garrido, Serrano served as a coach with the Titans for 12 seasons over two stints. Serrano spent eight seasons as an assistant to George Horton from 1997-04 where he would win a national championship in 2004. Serrano returned to Fullerton as a head coach for four seasons from 2008-11. A two-time Big West Coach of the Year, Serrano won three Big West titles and led the Titans to the College World Series in 2009. This series represents Serrano's first coaching appearance at Goodwin Field since 2011.
