CSUN to Host UC Riverside This Week

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—The CSUN Softball team returns home this week as the Matadors host UC Riverside in a three-game series.Â

The Matadors (16-26, 6-9 Big West) host UC Riverside this weekend. Friday's doubleheader begins at noon, while Saturday's single-game gets underway at 1 p.m. Saturday is alumni day as the Matadors welcome nearly 40 former players back to Matador Diamond. In addition, CSUN will honor former CSUN head coach Gary Torgeson with his family scheduled to be in attendance. Torgeson's wife Debbie will be throwing out the first pitch on Saturday. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+ with Ghizal Hasan on the call.Â

UC Riverside is 16-21, 7-8 in Big West play after dropping two of three games at home to Hawai'i last weekend. Lauryn Garewal is the team leader in batting at .362. In addition, she has a .505 slugging percentage as Garewal has posted eight doubles, two triples, and a home run this season. Leading the team in home runs is Gigi Araki (6), while the Highlanders' leader in RBI is Max Ortega (24). Chrys Hildebrand has posted a team-best 8-8 record in 21 appearances in 2022. Pitching a UCR-high 100.2 innings, she has recorded a 3.84 ERA. CSUN leads the all-time series against UC Riverside 94-15. Â

Last week, the Matadors broke a nine-game losing streak when CSUN swept UC Davis in Davis. Alexis Lemus' three-run home run in the top of the third proved to be the difference as the Matadors defeated the Aggies 3-1 in the first game of the series. Kenedee Jamerson needed only 78 pitches to record her eighth complete game. She tossed a four-hitter, striking out two, and walking two. Jamerson got 11 ground ball-outs.Â

A five-run seventh inning helped propel CSUN to a 7-2 victory over UC Davis in the nightcap. Jaymi Steward went 3-for-3. She scored three times and drove in a run. Kaylee Escutia was 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Alexis Martinez was the winning pitcher, with Allie Gardiner recording the save.

Mia Stankiewicz's two-out home run in the fifth inning proved to be the difference as CSUN defeated UC Davis 4-3 in Sunday's series finale. Lemus hit her second home run of the year for the Matadors' first run, followed by a Mikayla Carman two-RBI double. The Aggies tied the score, setting the stage for Stankiewicz's game-winning hit.Â

Carman hit .500 during the weekend, while Escutia posted a .364 batting average during the three games. Escutia played first base for the first time this season and did not commit an error in 28 attempts. In addition, each of the three pitchers who appeared for CSUN during the series picked up a win.Â
