Gonzalez's Homer Lifts CSUN to First Series Win Over Fullerton Since 2002
4/24/2022 4:49:00 PM | Baseball
FULLERTON, Calif.---Gabe Gonzalez broke a seventh-inning tie with a three-run homer to lift CSUN (20-17, 9-9 Big West) to a 5-2 win and the Matadors' first series win over Cal State Fullerton (15-22, 9-6 Big West) since 2002 on Sunday at Goodwin Field. Lucas Braun worked 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on nine hits to go with six strikeouts for his fourth win of the season. The Matador bullpen combined to limit the Titans to one hit over the final 2.1 innings.
The Titans jumped on Braun in the first inning as Carter White singled up the middle on the first pitch of the game before Jackson Lyon drove a two-run home run to right field on the next pitch.
Braun though settled down after the rocky start to retire nine of the next 11 batters to help the Matadors rally back.
Â
CSUN manufactured its first run in the top of the second, cutting the deficit in half. After Joey Kramer was hit by a pitch and Kevin Fitzer singled, Luke Powell moved both runners up a base on a sacrifice bunt. Brandon Bohning then followed with an RBI groundout.
Â
The Matadors squared the game up in the fourth inning, again scratching across a run on a single hit. Kramer would be hit by a pitch again before moving up to second base on a wild pitch. After Powell walked and Bohning reached on a single to load the bases, CJ Yogi beat out a potential-inning ending double play at first base to bring in the tying run.
CSUN left nine runners on base through the first six innings but would come away with the big hit of the afternoon in the seventh. Cameron Repetti walked Kai Moody and Kramer in the top of the seventh to bring Gonzalez to the plate. Coming on as a pinch-hitter in the fifth, Gonzalez jumped on the first pitch and drove the ball over the left-center wall for a three-run homer.
Braun scattered three hits over the middle innings to keep the Titans at bay. He returned to the mound in the seventh, pitching with the lead, and would retire two of the first three batters. However, Lyon reached on an infield single, prompting a change on the mound. Freshman Xavier Martinez came out of the bullpen to retire Caden Connor on a grounder for the third out.
Martinez pitched a perfect eighth inning but gave up a leadoff single to Nate Nankil in the ninth. Blake Schriever would relieve Martinez and close the door on any potential Titan rally by sitting down the next three batters for his sixth save of the season.

GAME NOTES
The Matadors' last series win over the Titans was a 2002 three-game sweep at Goodwin Field. Fullerton had previously won 17-straight series from 2003-19 before the teams split a four-game series last season at Matador Field.
Â
Sojka, who reached base three times, extended his on-base streak to 20 games. Kramer reached base four times without the benefit of a hit as he walked twice and was hit by a pitch twice.
The series represented head coach Dave Serrano's last coaching appearance at Goodwin Field. Serrano had been an assistant coach with Fullerton from 1997-04 and the head coach of the program from 2008-11. He won a national championship as an assistant coach with the Titans in 2004.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"In 2002, I was in [the Fullerton] dugout and coach Batesole brought his team the year they won the league title and they won the series. I'm proud to be the head coach of the program right now with my staff and these players to be the next team to do that. As I shared with these guys, this was an emotional weekend for me. I didn't ask them to win, we don't control that all of the time. I asked them to play their tales off because I have a lot of respect for this facility, this field, there is a lot of great memories in this place and they did everything I asked them to do. On top of that, they won the series after getting knocked down in a tough game Friday. Big at-bat by Gabe Gonzalez, he's been scuffling. We thought he found his swing a little bit in BP today and made us look like smart guys by putting him in the middle of the game. It was that experience along with the experience of Blake Schriever coming in making some big pitches there in the ninth.
"I've gotten down on this team, people have heard it when we haven't played the game with respect. We have a lot of season left but this team is in my heart pretty deep because they have a way of doing things and their fondness for each other. They knew this was a special weekend for me, coming back here for the last time and they made it even better."
