Matadors Walk Off on CSU Bakersfield to Take Series Opener
4/29/2022 6:37:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Bart West hit an infield single that would score two runs in the bottom of the ninth to help CSUN to a 5-4 walk-off win over CSU Bakersfield on Friday at Matador Field. Joey Kramer finished 3-for-4 with two RBI while CJ Yogi went 2-for-4 with a home run. Chad Wilson worked the final 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit to pick up the win.
The Matadors entered the bottom of the ninth trailing by a 4-3 margin but would mount a one-out rally against CSUB relief pitcher Cody Tucker. Graysen Tarlow battled back from a 0-2 count to eventually reach on an infield single then Kai Moody fell behind 1-2 in the count before drawing a walk. After Shunsuke Sakaino laced a single to left field to load the bases, West stepped to the plate with the game on the line. West would hit a grounder up the middle that shortstop Aaron Casillas smothered but Casillas could not make a play at any base. Tarlow scored on the play before Moody, with heads up base running, raced home from second base to score the winning run.
Earlier in the game, CSUN took the lead in the bottom of the second on a one-out RBI double from Kramer that scored Gabe Gonzalez. CSUN starter Blaine Traxel limited the Roadrunners to a pair of hits through the first three innings but CSUB struck for back-to-back home runs from James Bell and AJ Miller to take a 2-1 lead in the fourth.
The Matadors leaned on the long ball as well in the bottom of the fifth when Yogi hit a leadoff homer to left field to square the game up at 2-2.
Traxel had retired five-straight Roadrunners before giving up a leadoff single to Daniel Carrizosa in the sixth. After retiring the next two batters, Traxel battled Bailey Seeger to a 2-2 count but served up a two-run home run that gave CSUB a 4-2 advantage.
Wilson took over for Traxel in the seventh inning with two runners on base and two outs. The senior would force Carrizosa to ground into a fielder's choice to end the frame. Wilson worked out of another jam in the eighth, stranding runners at the corners by retiring three-straight CSUB batters.
CSUN cut the lead in half in the bottom of the eighth on a one-out RBI single from Kramer that scored Moody. The Matadors though settled for one run, leaving the bases loaded.
Wilson returned to the mound in the top of the ninth and had his best frame of the afternoon, retiring the side in order to set up the fireworks in the bottom of the ninth.
GAME NOTES
Sojka finished 1-for-5 at the plate to extend his on-base streak to 21 games. Yogi's home run was his second this season. Ali Camarillo made his return to the field in a pinch-hit role in the bottom of the eighth after missing the last 22 games due to injury.
Traxel finished with 6.2 innings pitched and four runs allowed to go with four strikeouts. Matador pitching has not allowed a walk in four of the last five games.
The walk-off win was the Matadors' first this season. CSUN's last walk-off victory was previously on April 4, 2021, when Kai Moody hit a three-run homer to beat UC Irvine. Conversely, the Matadors have lost four games this season in walk-off fashion.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"I don't think we were in tune [early in the game], I take that personally because I'm the coach and I need to get these guys ready to play but we turned it on in the seventh. Blaine didn't have his A-game, but he gave us a chance, Chad Wilson did a great job in relief, but it was about the quality at-bats. We had some quality at-bats early, and we didn't get rewarded, that's when I knew the game was punishing us maybe for the attitude we showed up with. Yogi had a big swing to tie the game. In the ninth, the at-bat by Tarlow with one out, he had good at-bats all game long, and then Kai Moody, who is always a guy that wants to do something really special. It took a lot of discipline for him to sit on some pitches that were close then ended up getting a walk. Shun [Sakaino] coming off the bench and getting a base hit, he's worked hard and he deserved that. Then you come back to Bart, he scalded the ball throughout the day, he just hadn't been rewarded for it.
"So I'm just very proud of these guys, they keep doing exciting things. I'm hoping that they continue to learn as we are building this program, learning not to disrespect the game. The game is hard enough as it is. It doesn't matter how big the crowd is, it doesn't matter what the opponent's record is, the game is hard enough so respect the game and what you do every day."
