16th-Ranked Pepperdine Blanks CSUN, 5-0 in Saturday Dual

MALIBU, Calif. – The CSUN Beach Volleyball team took two of the five pairs to three sets before falling 5-0 to the 16th-ranked Waves on Saturday at the Pepperdine Beach Volleyball Courts.
In the fourth meeting all-time between the two teams, the hosts picked up wins in the opening flight as Simone Peiebe and McKenna Thomas swept the Matadors' True McCullough and Seyvion Waggoner 21-17, 21-12 in the No. 2 pair before Cameron Bakienko and Kate Clermont topped Kailey Klein and Victoria Rogers in the No. 4 pairs by the score of 21-13, 21-15. The Waves' Jordan Benoit and Gracie Pedersen then picked up a 21-15, 21-7 victory over Layla Cederlind and Jadin Williams on the exhibition court.
Peyton Lewis and Juju Quintero then clinched the overall dual with a two-set win (21-11, 21-18) over Darbi Honeycutt and Mikaela Maughan in the No. 3 pairs. CSUN would battle in the final two pairs as both Lauren Eknoian and Emily Sparks and Abbey Sweeting and Madison Klungel forced a third and deciding set. Eknoian and Sparks won the opening set over Pepperdine's Madison Shields and Melanie Paul, 21-18 but the Waves would claim the final two sets 21-9 and 15-8 to make it 4-0 with one match remaining.
After dropping the first set 21-12, Sweeting and Klungel battled back against Savana Greene and Rio Frohoff to win the second set 21-19 setting up a third and deciding set. The Waves would win the race to 15 (15-9) and take another three-set decision for a clean sweep on the day.
UP NEXT
CSUN (15-14) will cap the 2022 regular season next Saturday as the Matadors face Long Beach State and Cal State LA in a tri-dual at the LBSU Sand Courts in Long Beach. CSUN takes on the Beach in the opener at 9 a.m. before taking on the Golden Eagles at 11 a.m.
