10-Run Third Powers CSUN Past UCSB 12-3

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—A 10-run third inning powered CSUN to a 12-3 victory over UC Santa Barbara in the 2022 Big West softball season finale for both clubs Saturday afternoon at Campus Diamond.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH CHARLOTTE MORGAN
A two-out rally in the top of the second resulted in RBI for Sydney Freijanes and Aaliyah Swan and a 2-0 lead for the Matadors.
The game changed in the third. With one out, 10 consecutive Matadors reached base. Capping off the rally was a Kennedi Sorensen grand slam home run to the deepest part of the park in center field. 15 CSUN batters came up in the inning, resulting in a 12-0 lead.
Maci Fines' two-out triple in the bottom of the third drove in two runs for the Gauchos. Then, pinch-hitter Daryn Siegel singled in a run with two outs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Matadors' advantage to the final 12-3 score.
All nine offensive starters scored at least one run for CSUN. Alexa Landeros went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored to pace the Matadors. Swan drove in two runs during a 1-for-2 day. Jaymi Steward and Freijanes both recorded two runs scored. Sam Denehy and Allly Nodohara both charted two hits for UCSB.
Kenedee Jamerson, a fifth-year graduate student, picked up the win in the circle for CSUN. She gave up three hits in three innings of work. CSUN concluded 2022 with a 24-30 record and 14-13 in Big West play. UC Santa Barbara ended the season with a 15-39 mark, 6-21 in league play.
NOTES
The win for CSUN provided the Matadors its first winning season in Big West play since 2017 (11-10)…After losing nine in a row in Big West action and falling to 3-9, CSUN finished 11-4 over the final 15 conference games…The Matadors recorded 18 more victories over a 2021 season limited by COVID-19.
