NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - CSUN junior middle blocker Daniel Wetter earned All-American honors for the second time in his career Monday as he was named honorable mention on the 2022 NVA/AVCA All-America Team.
After being named first-team All-Big West for the third consecutive season on Apr. 20, Wetter earned his second national honor on Monday. He followed up his All-America accolades from the 2020 season and is now just the sixth player in CSUN history to earn NVA/AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) national honors multiple times.
"Obviously we're ecstatic for Dan to earn All-America honors again this year," said CSUN head coach Jeff Campbell. "He came into the program with the idea that he wanted to be an All-American and he really willed that to happen. He is one of the hardest workers we've ever had in the program and he wanted nothing more than to be the best player he could be. As coaches, we're thrilled to be able to help him along the way."
Wetter, who annually ranked among the leading hitters in the nation, hit .469 over 58 sets this season. He ranked second in the Big West and fifth nationally. His career hitting percentage of .457 ties Jacek Ratajczak (2007-10) for the all-time program record.
Wetter has put together a remarkable run over the final two weeks of the 2022 regular season. In four matches against UC Irvine and Long Beach State, the redshirt junior from Camarillo, put down 55 kills with just three hitting errors on 83 swings, a .627 hitting clip. He put down a season-high 16 kills on 24 errorless swings at Long Beach State, two matches after knocking down 13 kills on 19 errorless attacks in the series opener against UC Irvine.
During the stretch, Wetter passed both the 600 career kill and 200 career block milestones.
Wetter is the program's 54th men's volleyball All-American dating back to 1985 when Chuck English earned the program's first All-America honor by Volleyball Magazine. Neil Coffman was the first CSUN player to earn AVCA All-America honors in 1991 and would be followed by 23 Matadors, most recently Dimitar Kalchev in 2019 and Wetter himself in 2020.
Each of the six Big West men's volleyball programs claimed at least one 2022 honoree in their ranks. Long Beach State outside hitter Alex Nikolov, the 2022 AVCA Newcomer of the Year, joined Hawai'i setter Jakob Thelle and Long Beach State libero Mason Briggs on the AVCA first team. On the 12-player second team are Long Beach State sophomore opposite Clarke Godbold, UC San Diego senior outside hitter Kyle McCauley, and the sophomore Hawai'i tandem of outside hitter Spyros Chakas and middle blocker Guilherme Voss.
UC Irvine pin hitters Hilir Henno and Francesco Sani, Long Beach State setter Aidan Knipe and outside hitter Spencer Olivier, Hawai'i opposite Dimitrios Mouchlias, the UC Santa Barbara trio of setter Patrick Paragas, middle blocker Donovan Todorov and outside hitter Ryan Wilcox, and Wetter, are all among 30 student-athletes who garnered All-America honorable mention.
