FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.—Despite breaking the school and Big West record in the 100m hurdles, CSUN's Yanla Ndjip-Nyemeck, came up one spot short of advancing to the NCAA National Championships Saturday at the West Preliminary Round at John McDonnell Field.
Ndjip-Nyemeck, a redshirt freshman, ran :13.02 in the first of three quarterfinal heats to break the old school mark of :13.13 which was set by Sydney Mosely in 2019. In addition to breaking the CSUN school record, Ndjip-Nyemeck, broke the Big West record in the event. The old Big West record was :13.06 that was set by Idaho's Angela Whyte in 2003.
With the top 12 advancing to nationals, Ndjip-Nyemeck would end up with the 13th fastest time of the quarterfinals. Washington State's Micaela De Mello took the final qualifying spot by running :12.98. Kayla Robinson of Texas A&M was the overall winner as she ran :12.57.
"I am so proud of Yanla," said CSUN head coach Justin Johnson. "She ran an amazing race today, breaking the school and conference record. Yanla is one of the best hurdlers in the country and she proved that today. (Recording) the first spot out of the national (meet) is hard to digest, but this is just the beginning of what I believe will be an amazing career for Yanla."
