Matadors Drop Midweek Game at USC
5/3/2022 9:58:00 PM | Baseball
LOS ANGELES, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (22-19) dropped a 6-0 decision to USC (22-20) on Tuesday night at Dedeaux Field. Four CSUN pitchers saw action with Diego Gutierrez starting the game with three shutout innings. The Matadors were limited to five hits in the contest.
Â
Gutierrez gave the Matadors an opportunity to stay close early in Tuesday's contest. The freshman retired the side in the bottom of the first but would have to work out of danger in the second inning when USC loaded the bases with two outs. After an error at third base kept the second inning alive for Johnny Olmstead, Gutierrez escaped trouble by inducing a groundball to third that would end the inning, leaving three on the base paths. Gutierrez would bounce back with a clean bottom of the third inning to keep the game scoreless.
Gutierrez was lifted in favor of Blaine Traxel in the fourth inning. In the frame, USC greeted Traxel unkindly with a leadoff single from Adrian Colon-Rosado before Garret Guillemette roped a one-out double that just stayed fair down the right-field line for a Trojan run.
Traxel retired the next two batters after the Guillemette double but Olmstead belted a solo home run to lead off the fifth. Guillemette would strike again later in the fifth inning with a two-out RBI single to plate Rhylan Thomas for a 3-0 USC lead.Â
On the flip side, the Matadors were unable to get much going offensively throughout the night. CSUN had a leadoff batter reach in the second and fourth innings but both were caught stealing. The Matadors would not have a runner reach scoring position until the top of the eighth inning when Joey Kramer hit a leadoff double, however, the next three batters were retired in order by USC pitching.
After the Trojans added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a Colon-Rosado sacrifice fly, Andrew Sojka kicked off the ninth inning with a double but he was stranded at third base.
As a team, the Trojans used six pitchers that combined for 11 strikeouts and one walk allowed.
Â
GAME NOTES
Sojka extended his on-base streak to 24 games with his ninth-inning double. Graysen Tarlow reached base twice in the game with a single and a walk. Ali Camarillo made his first start in the field since March 13 and went 1-for-3 at the plate.
The Matadors suffered their first shutout loss since April 20, 2019.
ACCORDING TO COACH DAVE SERRANO
"Tonight was a rough night in all aspects. Diego pitched three scoreless innings, which is most important, but I wasn't real satisfied where his elevation was on his pitches. He didn't make adjustments. Blaine came in, left balls up and they made him pay for it. I don't think we played great defense in the outfield tonight, we misjudged some balls and I thought some balls could have been outs, but that's baseball. I'm disappointed in our approach offensively. It's a midweek game, they threw a lot of pitchers out there and they kept us off balanced, and we never ever put pressure on them. A lot of popups, a lot of strikeouts, I think their infielders fielded maybe two balls all game long, and when you're doing that baseball can be easy for the opponent. When you make a team field the ball and throw the ball across the diamond, that's when you create some pressure.
Â
"The good thing is we don't have to wait until this weekend to recover. We get an opportunity to go down to San Diego State and find a way to recover and get better for tomorrow's game."
