NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---A trio of Matadors from the CSUN Water Polo team were named to the 2022 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches All-America Team on Wednesday. All first-time honorees, freshmen Dorottya Telek and Anna Pal and sophomore Helena Sandhagen each received Honorable Mention accolades.
"These accolades are impressive on many levels, but above all it speaks volumes to the team's overall performance and what we were able to accomplish after an 18-month hiatus," said head coach Matt Warshaw.
Originally from Budapest, Telek had a banner freshman season with the Matadors in 2022. Telek, who earned All-Big West First Team honors on April 26, led the conference in goals (77) and points (108) while she ranked second in steals (35) and third in assists (31). She shot 51 percent from the field and would draw 70 exclusions on the season. Telek scored at least one goal in 23 of 26 matches while she scored multiple times in 21 matches and three or more goals in 17 matches. She also topped the team with 12 goals in Big West play.
Telek's 77 goals this season were the third-most ever scored by a freshman player in Big West history and the seventh-most overall for a single season in league history. She scored the second-most goals in CSUN history, only trailing Whitney Delgado who netted 80 goals in 2010.
Pal also had an impressive freshman season for the Matadors. She earned a spot on the Big West All-Freshman Team this season after finishing second in the league in assists with 37. Pal would finish fifth in the Big West in points (84) and seventh in goals (47). The Budapest native shot 46.5 percent from the field while racking up 21 steals. Pal had 19 points in Big West play, totaling 10 goals. She finished with 14 multiple-goal performances and netted at least one goal in 22 matches.
A Claremont native, Sandhagen completed her first full season with CSUN after seeing her freshman season cut short in 2020 due to the pandemic. Sandhagen would post career-high totals in goals (26), assists (12), steals (11) and field blocks (7) for the Matadors while playing in all 26 matches. She also shot an impressive 47.3 percent from the field while scoring at least one goal in 15 matches.
Telek and Pal joined Marisa Young (2012-15) as the only Matador freshmen to ever earn All-American accolades in team history. CSUN matched its team record for the most All-American honorees in a season, tying the 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2020 teams. In Matador history, 17 players have been named to the All-America team since the program's inception in 2002.
