NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – CSUN Athletics has named John Price the Director of Women's Volleyball for the Matadors and will oversee both the indoor and beach volleyball programs.
Price, who is the seventh head coach in the 46-year history of the CSUN indoor program, brings almost 30 years of volleyball coaching experience to the Matadors. This will be Price's second stint as the head coach of the indoor program as he also served one season as the head coach of the indoor team in 1993, compiling a record of 12-17 as an NCAA Independent.
"John brings a wealth of volleyball experience to both the women's indoor and beach programs," said Mike Izzi, CSUN's Director of Athletics. "He is committed to developing our student-athletes on and off the court, and with his extraordinary history with CSUN Volleyball – both on the men's and women's side – we're excited about the future of Matador women's volleyball programs."
Price returned to his alma mater in 2021 as an assistant coach alongside interim head coach Susie Terrusa on the indoor team. He also led the Matador beach program on an interim basis this past season (2022), leading CSUN to 17 wins which matched the program season record.
"I would like thank Mike Izzi and the entire search committee for the opportunity and privilege to lead these impressive programs," said Price. "After being away from collegiate volleyball for four years, I was thrilled to return to campus in 2021, and after working with both programs this past season, I'm excited to get started again this fall."
With a long and storied history at CSUN dating back to 1980, Price made his presence felt in the San Fernando Valley as the head coach of the Matador men's volleyball team from 1986-1997. He amassed an overall record of 194-158 (.551) leading CSUN to a 23-10 record and a berth in the 1993 NCAA Championship match where the Matadors fell to UCLA. Price's 1991 CSUN team posted a 22-7 overall record and a No. 3 national ranking, the school's first at the Division I level.
Price then transitioned to the women's indoor game at CSU Bakersfield where he remains the winningest coach in program history. He posted a career record of 232-169 (.579) over 14 seasons, leading the Roadrunners to a 28-4 overall record in his first season. Price was also at the helm of the CSUB program when the school made the transition from NCAA Division II to Division I status. Price's 2008 squad was the first Roadrunner team in any sport to post a winning record (18-15) in the school's Division I era.
After 14 seasons (1997-2010) at CSU Bakersfield, Price returned to CSUN in March of 2012, joining Jeff Stork's staff as an assistant coach. His coaching pedigree immediately proved to be a difference maker as he helped lead CSUN to a 46-26 (.639) overall record in his first three seasons on the bench. In 2013, CSUN posted 24 victories, the most by a Matador team since 1996, and reached the second round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament after defeating No. 12 Colorado State in the first round.
Since 2015, he has worked with various boys and girls club volleyball teams in both Valencia (Legacy Volleyball Club) and Bakersfield (Bakersfield Volleyball Club), before returning to CSUN in 2021.
A native of Pasadena, Calif., Price is a 1983 graduate of CSUN. He prepped at Crespi High School before playing collegiately at Pierce College and CSUN. His coaching career began at Thousand Oaks High School in 1982 where he led the Lancers to a pair of Marmonte League titles.
