HOW IT HAPPENED
In the opening set, UC San Diego took an early 3-1 lead before CSUN answered with points from Audrey Nuckols, Brockway and Okolo. The Tritons then used a strong serving stretch to open up an 11-4 lead, but the Matadors steadily worked their way back. CSUN closed within 22-21 on a Julia Bazylevych kill and eventually tied the set at 24-24 on a Kolar kill from Sentes.
The teams traded points deep into extra points. CSUN saved one set point at 26-26 when a UC San Diego serve went long, and Nuckols followed with a service error to give the Tritons another opportunity. Brockway kept the Matadors alive with a kill at 27-27, but UC San Diego answered with consecutive kills to take the set 29-27.
CSUN responded in the second set. The Matadors fell behind 4-1 but used a combination of UC San Diego errors and kills from Nuckols and Brockway to pull even at 13-13. Brockway then sparked a 6-3 CSUN run with a pair of kills, while Bazylevych and Turgeon added points to put CSUN ahead 19-16.
UC San Diego trimmed the deficit to 21-19, but Okolo delivered a kill, and Nuckols converted another point as CSUN moved in front 23-21. After the Tritons closed within one, Okolo put the Matadors at set point, and Brockway finished the frame with a kill for the 25-23 win. CSUN hit .379 in the set and evened the match at one.
UC San Diego controlled the third set after a tight opening stretch. The Tritons led 5-2 before CSUN rallied to take at 7-6 behind a Turgeon ace, a block from Okolo and Bazylevych, and a UC San Diego attack error.
The Tritons regained control with a 5-1 run, including three consecutive service aces from Marleena Catalan, to build a 12-8 lead. CSUN pulled within 14-13 after kills from Brockway and Okolo, but UC San Diego answered with four straight points. The Tritons extended their lead to 21-16 and closed out the set 25-19, taking a 2-1 match advantage.
The fourth set remained close throughout. UC San Diego claimed three of the first four points, but CSUN responded with kills from Annie Gilmore and Turgeon to take a 4-3 lead. The teams exchanged leads several times before reaching a 10-10 tie.
CSUN built a 17-15 advantage after a Triton hitting error, but UC San Diego answered with a 5-1 run to take a 20-18 lead. A Brockway kill fueled a 4-2 CSUN run that tied set at 22-22, before the Matadors moved ahead 24-23 on a block by Fallyn Blotzer and Okolo, but UC San Diego tied the set again. Blotzer put the Matadors in front 25-24, only for the Tritons to answer with three consecutive points to close out the match 27-25.
