IRVINE, Calif.---CSUN's Taylor Thames was named as one of eight recipient's of this year's Big West Service and Leadership Award on Friday, the conference office announced. Thames, who has competed on CSUN's women's soccer and women's track & field teams, is the third Matador to receive the honor since the award's inception in 2017-18.

A San Gabriel, Calif. native, Thames has served as the president of the CSUN Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). She also spent 2021-22 as a member of the Big West SAAC and Big West Undivided. Thames was the co-student founder of Matador United, CSUN's diversity and equity committee. In addition, Thames has been the lead assistant sprints coach for the Northridge Pacers, a camp counselor at CSUN women's soccer camps and an event organizer for the U.S. Women's National Team pre-event.
Thames has also volunteered at the Midnight Mission and the North Hills Community Parks Soccer League while pursuing a degree in Sociology with a focus in Social Welfare and Social Justice and a minor in Africana Studies.
On the field of play, Thames has spent the past four years as a goalkeeper on the women's soccer team, appearing in eight total matches and racking up four wins, three shutouts and 35 saves. She joined the women's track & field team in 2020 as a sprinter and has competed in the 100m and 200m events over the past two outdoor seasons.

Previous Matador recipients to the Big West Service and Leadership award include women's water polo alum Ashlee Sellung (2019-20) and women's volleyball and beach volleyball alum Erin Indermill (2018-19).Â
The Big West Service and Leadership award winners are selected at the discretion of each member-institution with criteria encompassing service, leadership and academics.
Each member-institution may submit one honoree per academic year who participates in a Big West sponsored sport and who engages consistently in service and leadership activities that impact the campus, community or regional levels. The awardee makes the most of opportunities presented to them by taking on key roles and is innovative in seeking out meaningful service and leadership opportunities, while keeping their academic eligibility on their respective team.
The 2022 recipients represent eight sports and the class of eight is the largest in the award's five-year history. Â
