Matadors Visit #6 UCLA, Host LMU in Home Opener

FULL GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer's (1-1) second week of the season includes another road test at a nationally-ranked opponent and its home opener. The Matadors visit No. 6 UCLA on Thursday at 4 p.m. before hosting Loyola Marymount in the 2022 home opener on Sunday at 5 p.m. Thursday's match will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks while Sunday's game will air on ESPN+.
CSUN's home opener is the first half of a Matador soccer doubleheader on Sunday night. After the women's soccer team takes on LMU, the CSUN Men's Soccer team will square off with SIU Edwardsville at 7:30 p.m. Fans can purchase one ticket to attend both CSUN matches.
WEEK ONE REWIND
The Matadors went 1-1 in week one of the 2022 season last week. CSUN dropped an 8-0 decision to No. 17 Pepperdine on Thursday to kick off the season. The Matadors though bounced back with a 2-1 come-from-behind win on Saturday at California Baptist for their first win of the season.
CSUN rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit in Saturday's win against CBU, capitalizing on a pair of goals within a five-minute span in the second half. Cindy Arteaga netted the Matadors' first goal of the season in the 61st minute before Ashley Cruz hit the go-ahead score in the 66th minute on a long drive up the middle of the field. Taylor Thames was strong in front of the net, collecting seven saves including five in the second half.
MATADOR HEADLINES
Cindy Arteaga scored her fourth career goal in the Matadors' win over CBU on Saturday, pushing her career point total to 12. Among the Matador returners, Arteaga is the active career leader in goals, points and assists (4). She is also just outside CSUN's all-time career top-10 list in shot attempts as Arteaga has 88 in her career, putting her 11 off the pace for 10th place in school history.
Ashley Cruz, who scored her first career game-winning goal on Saturday, tallied her third career goal with the Matadors. Cruz also made her season debut in the match after missing the Matadors' exhibition game against Santa Clara on Aug. 13 and the season opener at Pepperdine on Aug. 18. She finished playing 58 minutes, totaling three shots.
In goal, Taylor Thames would record her first win since the 2019 season. After missing the entire 2021 campaign, Thames has started both of CSUN's matches in goal this season. In her career, Thames has posted a 5-3-1 record in nine starts.
A total of 13 Matador newcomers including 11 true freshmen have already made her school debut this season. Of the 13 newcomers, only Stevie Reynolds has started both of CSUN's matches while Yoshi Rubalcava and Sami Kolin have started one match apiece.
SERIES HISTORY
UCLA leads CSUN 9-1 in the all-time series, dating back to the Matadors' inaugural season in 1995. The Bruins have won the last eight in the series with the Matadors' only win coming in the 1996 season at home. Last season, UCLA picked up a 3-0 home win over CSUN. The Matadors have gone 0-5 on the road in the series.
LMU holds a 11-4 edge over CSUN in women's soccer but the teams have not met since 2014 season. In the teams' last meeting, LMU won by a 1-0 decision at home, snapping a CSUN three-match winning streak in the series. CSUN has not hosted LMU at Matador Soccer Field since the 2013 season when the Matadors prevailed 2-1. The Matadors are 3-4 all-time in Northridge against the Lions.
SCOUTING UCLA
The sixth-ranked Bruins opened the 2022 season with a 1-0 win over Iowa last Thursday at Wallis Annenburg Stadium. UCLA has won the past two Pac-12 crowns as the team is coming off a 16-win season last season. The Bruins would be eliminated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 2021 by Big West champion UC Irvine. This season, the Bruins were picked to finish second in the Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll. Head coach Margueritte Aozasa is in her first season leading the program.Â
Both goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy and defender Lilly Reale were named to the 2022 Hermann Trophy Watch List. Brzykcy, who has one shutout this season, had nine clean sheets last season to go with a 0.55 goals-against-average while Reale had one goal and one assist. Reilyn Turner is the team's top returning scorer with 10 goals and 21 points recorded a season ago.
SCOUTING LOYOLA MARYMOUNT
The Lions earned a scoreless draw with UC Irvine to open their 2022 season on Sunday. In 2021, the LMU finished 0-19 overall and 0-9 in WCC play. LMU was selected to finish ninth this season in the WCC Preseason Poll. Head coach Chris Chamides enters his first season at the helm of the LMU women's soccer team.
Makiya Christensen had a team-high four points to go with two assists last season for the Lions while Sierra Dunphy had one goal in 2021. A familiar face to Matador fans, Amanda Delgado started the Lions' opener against UCI last Thursday and posted a shutout. Delgado lettered three seasons with the Matadors from 2018-21 and made 45 starts.
