LOS ANGELES, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer (1-2) dropped a 6-0 decision at No. 6 UCLA on Thursday at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. Taylor Thames tied a school record for saves in a game with 16.
Â
The Matador defense was tested throughout the first half as the Bruins collected 20 shots with 13 on goal. UCLA struck first in the 11th minute on a shot from Sunshine Fontes from near the top of the box. Thames was able to keep the ball out of the net on attempts from Maricarmen Reyes and Reilyn Turner, but the Bruins' attack in the 15th minute resulted in another goal. Lexi Wright was the recipient of a cross from Brianne Riley near the net as Wright finished past a diving Thames for a 2-0 UCLA lead.
Â
The Matadors would find themselves trailing by a 3-0 margin in the 22nd minute when Fontes added to her goal tally, capitalizing on a Wright pass.
Angelica Claiborne had the Matadors' best look of the first half when she collected a loose ball following a corner kick. Claiborne's shot was directed toward the right post, but goalkeeper Kelly McManus made a diving stop to keep the Matadors off the scoreboard.
Â
After intermission, the Bruins quickly went on the attack in the opening moments of the second half. A corner kick resulted in UCLA's fourth goal when Ally Lemos found Maya Evans for another strike. Fontes soon completed the hat trick with her third goal, this time on a free kick from atop the box in the 60th minute.
Â
CSUN's defense would shine in the 66th minute on another corner kick from UCLA. Turner came up with the loose ball inside the six-yard mark, but Thames was there along with a pair of CSUN defenders to knock down two shot attempts.
Kacie Garrity notched CSUN's second shot in the 71st minute on a drive down the left wing. Garrity looked for the far post on the play, but goalkeeper Neeku Purcell made a clean save.Â
Sofia Cook capped off the scoring for the day in the 77th minute, giving the Bruins a 6-0 advantage.
GAME NOTES
UCLA outshot CSUN 34-2 in the match including 22-2 in shots on goal. The Bruins also had a 10-1 edge in corner kicks. A total of 13 fouls were committed with CSUN whistled for seven of them. Gabriela Robles was shown the yellow card in the 60th minute.
Thames' 16 saves tied a school record for a single game first set in the Matadors' inaugural season in 1995. Kim Kuhn collected 16 saves on Oct. 1, 1995 against Sonoma State before Tawni Takagi matched that record at Montana on Oct. 16, 1998.
Erin Anderson made her season debut after missing the Matadors' first two matches to start 2022 while freshman Samantha Healy played in her first career game with CSUN.
ACCORDING TO COACH CHRISTINE JOHNSON
"I think UCLA is very good and very much deserving of their ranking. I felt like we did a pretty good job to prepare for the game, but I think they are a talented team and we didn't match them."
