COACH JOHN PRICE SAID
"The good news is we had chances to win sets two and three, the bad news is we didn't win either one. I thought we looked a little nervous early on but we got better as the match went on which is important. But we can't use set one as a warm-up tomorrow. Even if we had won today, I wouldn't put a lot of stock in our first match of the year. You'd rather win than lose when you're learning early in the season but we have a long season ahead of us and we'll look forward to the two matches tomorrow."
FIRST SET
The Matadors never led in the opening set after the Bulldogs picked up a kill on the initial point. CSUN used a Hunter/Orshoff block and a Drake hitting error to trim an early 6-2 deficit down to 6-4, before two straight Matador miscues boosted the Bulldog lead back to four. CSUN again trimmed the deficit to two at 9-7 following a XX kill. The Matadors then used a 3-0 run, highlighted by kills from Nevarez and Orshoff, to pull even at 11-11. Drake answered with a 5-1 run to open up a 16-12 lead and CSUN could only get within three the rest of the set.
SECOND SET
Looking to pull even, CSUN got out to a quick start in the second set, leading 7-1 after the opening eight points. After an early Drake timeout, the Matadors kept the pressure on when kills by Hunter and Macias followed by a Bulldog hitting error opened up CSUN's largest lead at 13-4. A Matador service error on the ensuing point propelled Drake on a 9-3 run that forced a CSUN timeout at 16-13. A co-block from Anderson and Orshoff out of the timeout boosted the Matador lead back to four and a Bulldog hitting error extended the CSUN lead to five at 20-15. The Bulldogs then put together a 7-2 run to knot the score at 22-22 which forced a Matador timeout. Drake then closed out the comeback by winning three of the final four points to take the 25-23 win.
THIRD SET
After dropping the first three points of the final set, CSUN rallied to take the lead behind a 7-0 run which was capped by a Nevarez ace. An Orshoff kill opened up a 10-5 Matador lead and CSUN still led by five at 12-7 when Nevarez put down a kill. After the Bulldogs trimmed the lead to two (13-11), Anderson's ace capped a 4-1 CSUN run which again pushed the lead to five at 17-12. Drake's Oberpriller's kill on the next point sent the Bulldogs on a 6-1 run that tied the score at 18-18. A Drake ace forced a Matador timeout at 19-18 but the Bulldogs would go on to claim six of the final seven points in a 25-19 win.
