MORAGA, Calif. – Following a gutsy come-from-behind five-set win over San Francisco the night before, the CSUN women's volleyball team came up empty in a straight-set loss to Saint Mary's Saturday afternoon at University Credit Union Pavilion.
Senior Nicole Nevarez had a team-high eight kills but the Matadors (3-6) were limited to a .112 team hitting clip in a 25-16, 25-21, 25-11 loss to the Gaels (2-4).
KEY STATISTICS
• Nevarez, who hit .227 on 22 swings, also added eight digs and three blocks but no other CSUN hitter had more than four kills in the match.
• A quartet of Matadors (Taylor Orshoff, Abigail Macias, Taylor Hunter, Lauryn Anderson) tallied four kills apiece with Anderson hitting .400 on 10 errorless attacks followed by Macias at .333. Macias also had a season-high four blocks for the Matadors.
• Setters Carisa Barron and Kaia Kanan combined for 23 assists with Barron adding eight digs while libero Breanna Mitchell led the Matadors with 12 digs.
• Hawley Harrer led Saint Mary's with a match-high 12 kills (.312) while Kjersti Strong also reached double figures with 11 kills (.625) for the Gaels.
SET ONE
CSUN held a pair of early leads, the last at 7-6, before a 6-0 Saint Mary's run put the Gaels in front 12-7. Saint Mary's would extend the lead to six (14-8) when Barron's attack was blocked. CSUN would use a 5-2 run, capped by a Magdalena Juric block, to close to within three at 16-13. But two more points by the Gaels pushed the lead back to five and the hosts pulled away late for the 25-16 win.
SET TWO
The second set was the most competitive of the match as the Matadors overcame an early four-point deficit to tie the score at 11-11 following another Juric block. Anderson's kill would give CSUN a one-point lead at 13-12 and the Matadors still led by one at 14-13 following a Gaels service error. But a 5-1 run by Saint Mary's forced CSUN into a timeout with the Matadors now trailing 18-15. A Gaels service error out of the timeout cut the lead to two but CSUN would get no closer down the stretch, falling 25-21.
SET THREE
The final set got away from the Matadors early on as the hosts claimed five of the opening six points and would eventually lead by nine at 12-3. Kills by Anderson and Nevarez kept CSUN within striking distance at 12-5 and 13-6 before four straight points by the Gaels opened up an insurmountable 17-6 cushion.
UP NEXT
The Matadors play their final pre-Big West tournament next weekend, traveling to Tucson, Ariz. for three matches at the Wildcat Invitational.
